ok, so the other day I go to price out a PC.
When I got to the video card, I was like WTF??
the AMD cards. wth happened?
I had my eyes on the 290 since it was like $400.
Now they're $600?
So this mining stuff is hitting my wallet hard, and I don't even mine......
I'm probably going to end up buying an OG GTX 780


wth happened to reasonable pricing lol $200 over MSRP.. that's just wrong lol

I promised myself not to complain anymore about the prices anymore so I'm going to have to pass....

But the alternative is to find a cheap 770. That's what I would do if I were building now and had to buy a gpu. It's not exactly a 290... I know.

Well, if you think going from a 6970 to a 770 isn't an upgrade, then it's going to be $500 minimum purchase with the 780 as the Hammer mentioned. Yeah, I know if sucks that the 290 was $400 because that was a great deal at that price, tremendous value.

i was about to buy a 290 a couple weeks ago, saw that prices spiked and didnt bother.

what annoyed me the most was that most were advertised as ''mining supreme deals'' when they were £50 more than when they first come out!

oh and the specs are now

Only in America/Asia. Here the power bill would kill us. Only ASIC mining is profitable here, depending on the host/power supply HW used and exact location, sometimes only just.

yep exactly... i feel lucky that the 290 are still around 400chf where i am (if i could afford one, that is.)

I just meant that those setups like in the pics posted by manofthem will be a scarce sight here in Europe. I have no clue on the prices of high-end graphics boards.

I don't understand, do these people steal electricity from somewhere? I have one small mining rig and been running for past week or so and based on Kill-A-Watt reading and what BTC I got paid and the electricity charges I pay I am at a loss!

I will post some readings later in the evening.

Yeah I feel the pain for OP.

Anyway 6970 to 7950 I saw decent jump in gaming performance, so I think a 770 will give bit better experience than a 7950!

Another thought is if the PSU has the stamina, then add a used 6970 for CF.

BTC is not useful for SHA-256 mining since first FPGAs and then ASICs have surpassed them in profitabilility, with much higher hashrates at often less than 2 watts per GH. Since FPGAs and ASICs are not suitable for Scrypt mining, you may have a chance there (thus mining Litecoin, Feathercoin etc.). But if it is a dedicated pc it is going to be hard.

yes dedicated 7870 mining at wafflepool (Dogecoin, feathercoin etc).

Did you make sure you have a small form factor motherboard (not ATX), a PSU that is at least 80Plus Bronze and not overkill (e.g. 750w for a 200w system), did you make sure you lower the intensity so that the hashrate and power draw are in balance?

This has always been one of the possible outcomes. If BitCoin collapses, couldn't we see a flood of GPU's coming into the market and driving the prices to the floor? Can you say $100 HD7970's? I for one would love it. Single GPU graphics cards for more than $500 is just preposterous.

I would not enjoy the fact that a lot of people will get hurt, but that is the danger of "gold rushes." I would especially feel for small PC shops that might get stuck with inventory that they can't sell, at least without a loss.
