I don't understand peoples frustration with game sizes getting larger.

Everyone wants better graphics, well better graphics require higher resolution textures and more complicated models and those are larger in size.
Textures for example are equivalent to a image file so compare the size difference between a 1024x1024 .png and a 8192x8192 .png every object in the game has at least 3 textures that adds up quick .
If you want a game to use the old standard of 8-12 gb of space then expect it to look like a game from that era.

Serious sam 3 would like to have a word with you. Steam install takes up just abit over 5.3 gbs and looks better than this over hyped garbage.

It uses the same 150 or so textures/models everywhere just re arranged.
That works for some games but not all.

What you are describing has never happened. HDD space has also advanced ahead of demand. Always.

Four years ago I was just getting out of college. The 1 TB drives were at a reasonable pricing (the $100 +/- 20 depending upon deals), and the 2 TB drives weren't far behind. Before that, my cheap self bought 500 GB drives because they might drop to about the $70 mark. I managed to fill several 500 GB drives in my time at college...fill in your own blanks, but I'll not say with what., so I started with about 1.2 TB of data. Figuring that I'd be increasing that data substantially, I bought the RAID array for 6 TB of storage about 3 years ago.

Now, the pricing for 2 TB drives went wonky, because of the natural disaster at their primary manufacturing area. I'm going to be mildly socio-pathic here, and claim I don't care about the human lives. The net influence from where I sat was a drastic increase in the pricing of 2 TB drives. This spike has been evening out over the past years, but it isn't like it was before then. If the trend from those days had continued the 5 TB drives just coming out now would be in the $150 range.

Back to the matter of storage, We're looking at 5.5 TB-1.2 initial=4.3 TB of open room. Not counting steam games, I've got about 1.1 TB free at the moment. That means I've amassed 3.2 TB of data in the span of about 3 years. This means I've got about another year before I have to either reconstruct the data on another array, or expand the current one. Looking back on the price I paid then, and the price the same project has now

Tell me again why storage space doesn't matter.

Assuming old pattern held out, and the 4 TB drives were at the price level 2 TB is now, you'd have an excellent point. An investment of $100 could buy you enough storage for 90+ Titanfalls. That would be dandy, and the complaints would have absolutely no merit. Assuming you're a cheap bastard (and everyone is at some point or another), the 40 GB install is a might bit extreme. Is the game worth it, doesn't matter. There is no real problem in my opinion, it's just surprising that so large a file is being offered on a game like this. Interesting, but not a bad thing.

You're going to have to justify this statement, because I think you are looking at a different market than I am. A 2 TB HDD is just now settling at about $90-100. Three years ago it was at about the same price (pre-flooding). How is storage getting cheaper? Maybe if you look at SSD pricing, but if that's your logic then Titanfall will cost another $25+ in storage. That seems kinda high to me.

Additionally, 21 GB installers will take 3 dual layer DVDs in order to store. I remember the days when you had like 4 CDs for one game. I still remember the awesomeness of buying Homeworld and spending a couple of hours reading the instruction manual prior to loading anything on the computer. I'm behind you on there being no reason to moan, but it has been years since I bought a physical disc that contained anything worth while. It's too bad, because it seems like we're being pegged as having too little of an attention span to read anything before playing games.

Hopefully there is something released for Titanfall that expands the universe a little. The UT series was all multi-player, but it still managed to string along a set of matches that gave at least a semblance of background narrative to your actions.

im not taking SSds into consideration. WD 320 GB drives were preflood when they were high priced too back when 320GB drives gave you the "space" TB drives give you now. im measuring generations not economy's.

There has never in the history of computing been a shortage of disc space. Applications have always been written to fit into the space required by the average user of that time.

I have 3 1tb drives and a msata SSD on my laptop and I already am looking for more space. In the laptop world the highest size HDs are 2tb (9.5mm) but those are just coming out and still very expensive. There is a 1.5tb (9.5) HDs are also still very expensive. I wait for HDs to come under $100 for me to even look at. So today I bought a 3tb ext HD, I'm happy until I need more space.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - 25GB - 2012
Rage - 25GB - 2011
TERA - 25GB - 2011
Age of Conan - 26GB (at launch, 31GB after expansions) - 2008
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition - 30GB - 2009
The Secret World - 30.8GB - 2012
Max Payne 3 - 35GB - 2012
X-Plane 9 - 70GB - Ongoing updates, and getting larger

Help me to understand your point here, because I'm missing it. The flooding, which retarded HDD pricing decreases, happened in early 2011. Assuming that is the case, then there should be two to three years where game size should be stagnant, then go upward as pricing returns to "normal." Can you point out where this occurs, on a list of the ten largest game installs compiled in 2013?

Or perhaps we can check Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_hard_disk_drives

2 TB HDDs were introduced in 2009. By 2011 the price for a 2 TB drive was south of $100. The first 4 TB drive was introduced in 2011. By the same logic, the 4 TB drive should be at the same price level...but can you find one? How about multiple 4 TB options? No, then how can you make the statement you are making? I can see the anecdotal relationship of "we have production 5 TB drives now," but what good are they if 2 2 TB model cost the same as 1 4 TB model?

My point still stands. The size is an interesting point. The devs have spent time on HD textures, which is nice. Hopefully we get to enjoy the textures, and they are worth the huge installation. No matter how big the game is, people will install it.

In 2009 at least 500GB was a common size in new computers. Obviously if you had 450GB of porn you would have issues fitting X-Plane on there as well, but that is hardly the game devs fault.

Meaning HDD space, on decently modern hard drives, have not been an issue and is not an issue. If you can't afford a new HDD there is trouble though.

Interesting that you should go directly to porn when assuming anything.

What I mean, and apparently is being lost, is that data doesn't disappear. Once I've converted that ancient version of the original Star Wars VHS to an mkv I've got no reason to delete it. Once I've compiled notes from four years of college the information does not simply disappear. Programming and coding experiments that I did as proof of concept can become smaller with shrewd programmers, but as I am not they are not getting smaller.

All of this means that things need to get bigger as time goes on. Yes, I appreciate that game developers are increasing game sizes. Where I have a problem though is that HDD volumes aren't keeping up. People say "I delete Steam games that I don't play to save room" are admitting that storage space is a concern.

Tomorrow you lose internet connectivity, or Steam/Origin shut down. How does anything you've paid for continue to work? In the case of Origin, you don't own anything and are S.O.L.. In the case of Steam Valve has promised you time to download the games before going under. Imagine just 40% of Steam users starting 10 downloads each. That winter sale slow-down is rendered a joke. It will take you several weeks to download all of your games, but Valve has only offered a two week lead time before servers go dark. Which of you games do you download? What is most valuable, and why?

If you'd downloaded the games once, and kept them on a backup drive there is no problem. You need storage though, and almost everyone continues buying games. This means more storage required as time goes on.

Back to my original point, which seems to be missed in the perception that I'm complaining about the size of Titanfall. It is interesting that the install will be 48 GB. It is not unreasonable, not unexpected, and not a concern. What this means is that other games will be emboldened to use more disc space, and the pricing of space has not changed to match this kind of a demand increase.

On an off topic note, 450 GB of porn is insane. Who in their right mind needs that much? $100 is the cost of a date, where you might get the chance to make some of your own. Priorities!

It's the internet, it had to be porn. :p

Anyway yes prices are the same, and the technology has leveled out a bit, but it's coming. And a new AAA game is almost as much as 1TB of HDD space, so (and if you're willing to buy refurbished/used drives it might even be cheaper than one AAA game)... It might be a problem, but it's not exactly a big problem.

While the graphics are OK to me and I understand because it's using the source engine, The textures and models didn't seem to impress me that much to justify the HUGE filesize, They look wayyyyy outdated to be 50GB in size, and they still look compressed as hell! In a multiplayer focused game no less!! (and with almost no singleplayer content)

BF3 was around 40GB with all expansion packs installed plus a story campaign and it looked way way better. and imo has more content

Other games using the source engine that's multiplayer based.. CSGO, DotA 2, TF2, Garry's Mod. each below 10 gigs. and they already have YEARS of free content and updates on top of them. and Titanfall only looks slightly better, Since it's using the Source Engine might as well wait for modders to port it to Garry's Mod as a game mode.

Not surprising with games getting larger in size anyways.

Also, the beta (demo) wasn't with finished textures, so they will all be improved on the full release...

It didn't hit me until now, but I think I know why it's 48gb.. Wait for it.. Time released expansions! I bet they are done with all the expansions, and they are shipping with the game. Now we just wait for the premium service, and we'll have access or Origins will just put each one up for sale. :toast: Either way if I'm right someone will unlock it or see it in the ISO, and then we will know. :toast: I hope I'm wrong, but if I am and they put out any expansions then this could easily be 75-100gb game.

EDIT: to many "then"s on that last part.. lol Oh well then ;)

Like the old Mass Effect 3 fiasco? They're in for a world of hurt if that happens. EA said last year they don't want to be hated anymore, and yet if this happens, it will just be another thing to add on to the list when considering the worst company of 2014 again.

It's just CoD with a reskin and new background, they always wanted to remove the single player from CoD, now they can do it from the word go in a new title. Sticking to what they know I guess... Just wait for Titanfall: Ancient Warfare 2: Titan Ops in 10 years time.
