I have found the solution to my issue.... or I hope it is...... I seen that I had "Upon resume show logon screen" checked.... I have unchecked this box and the issue appears to have gone away.
Forgive me but what issue?

I am still stunned by the cooler's inability to perform under heavy to extreme load, especially since the heatsink IS a huge brick.

I mean what the hell... two fans blowing on that, and I could still fry eggs on the backplate and the heatpipes.

@Octopuss check the review on Guru3D of a R9 290X from Asus (I know it's not your card, but still), they have thermal imaging for all the cards they review, and you'll see that most of the heat on that card is getting trapped under the back plate, hence the 'sauce pan' effect...

Hm, I actually thought the backplate was kind of like a big flat heatsink, and it was adding to the cooling effect. Fuck me sideways if it's the other way around :D In that case... KRAKEN!!

Did you try FurMark with the same settings though?
There is huge difference between normal gaming and benchmark-wanking :)

On the other hand, 44°C in idle as I can see right now... that's a bit weird for opened case.

Actually, same with mine, I cant keep my case closed, cause if I play something or do some rendering and stuff, my case turns into a makeshift sauna and makes everything in it throttle :laugh::laugh:
I know I was anticipating a bit of heat inside, but not THAT much :nutkick:

71c on mine in a closed case running the 15 min stress at your settings Octopuss.

Case makes a big difference, I was gaming alot last night and wasn't any heat really to speak of. It was all good but im sure when the 2nd card get installed the heats going to rise.

To me I think the problem is only 3 of the 5 pipes are only touching the chip.

Well I idle at 36c with my case.
I decided to try this furmark 15 min stress with 1007 core and 1250 mem and maxed at 85c :( ouch and that was with the fan at 100% from the start.
Could feel the heat venting out the top fan LOL.

Mate i hear you there ! I'm going to remove the backplate on mine. I have better temps now since removing stock TIM and using Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra on the heatsink (approx 3-5C better).

I'm thinking of selling the card on TPU and buying the MSI 290X Lightning when it hits the Aussie retailers like Umart..... (or just buy a reference and whack the G10 Kracken and AIO on)

P.S I'm kicking myself for not doing this in the first place............

My card idles in the low 30s, in a closed HAF-XB case, and tops at 83 degrees on the 15mins furmark torture test, the fan is audible but not annoyingly so once it spools up, if your card idles at such high temps and maxes out at over 90 degrees even using the BIOS at the performance setting and you want to think that's normal even after replacing the thermal paste, then the more power to you, I'll drop the matter :)

The problem with the backplate is that the actual cooler is mounted onto it, so unless you do some MacGyver stuff I don't see how could you get rid of it.

Maybe I'll try repasting the GPU once again with a bit more paste. I am saving my tube of Liquid Ultra for when I get the Kraken and won't have a reason to touch it again then.

Oh and when mining, the card is in the 75-80°C range with fan at 85%.

So I repasted it again with significantly higher amount of paste, and temperatures are still 45°C in idle. I guess it has something to do with ASIC quality being 72%, meaning (according to The Stilt) it is low leakage card which runs on higher voltage (but also being more efficient, if I understood his posts correctly).

Does this applie to your card? http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/new-bios-update-available-for-asus-r9290-dc2oc-4gd5-not-double-post-for-reference-r9.198516/

I already have the BIOS flashed, it was the first thing I did :D

And the description of GPU Tweak is spot on. What piece of shit program. I hope Afterburner v3 will get out of beta this year.

I never had a problem with Asus tweak utility with my Asus GTX 670, I found it did what I wanted without a problem.
But I don't push my cards to the point that it's flashing all sorts of colors, white spots and black screens :)

I think it's more of a problem with AMD 7 series and the R9 series from what other users in my area tell me.

EDIT: for you guys having inside case heating problems

I use a Corsair 650D case with the factory 200mm front fan blowing into the case from the front.
The rear fan is a Noctua NF-P14-FLX 140mm Ultra Quiet Cooling Fan 750-1200RPM that use a round frame with the same hole-spacing as common 120mm fans and producing more airflow due to its larger diameter and its been installed backwards so it's drawing air in from the rear. I also use a silver-stone magnetic dust filter on the back as to keep dust down to a min.

The ACool 45mm thick dual fan rad is mounted to the top of the case and the Corsair SP 120mm fans are mounted on the bottom of the rad, so it's blowing heat from inside the case through the rad and out the top of the case. I know your all going to give me the shits about that :fear:

But in short, It works. I have the case closed up and If I hold an incense stick to the top of the case where the rad is it blows the smoke up, and if I move over just a bit where there is a gap from the side of the rad that's exposing dust n such to fall through don't! the smoke rises Why? because I've created kinda a neutral positive pressure inside the case and have no heating issues at all.

I ran furmark 15 min stress test with all fans on low speed and the gpu set on auto. It hit a max temp of 71c with the gpu fan speed reaching a max of 53% and the system was totally quiet for the run.

I'll see how well this fan setup works when I get home mid week after I install the 2nd gpu... things might change but I dont think by much. I have enough CFM at low speeds to be able to keep air moving around. The only thing I do notice is the motherboards vrm cooler gets a bit warm to the touch now but that's not an issue. A trim in the water line hear and an an add on hose there, will h20 the vrms but time will tell the story if I need to or not.

I have an ASIC 72.9% card and even though it's using MSI's cooler it is idling between 37C and 44C. Only had it a few days so am trying to optimise my case airflow as it's running with negative pressure at the moment...

Looks like you have almost the same case setup as me. I have a 140mm fan on the back blowing in and 3x Noctua fans blowing up through a 360mm radiator in the roof. Just ran furmark for 15min and it capped at 87C and 79% fan. As I don't have a fan in the base the whole case is running on negative pressure, but my dust filters keep everything nice and clean.

Looks like your getting a bit more heat due to using a 290X rather then the 290 so I can see where the extra heat is coming from.

I flashed a 290X bios onto my gpu the other night and noticed the temperature wasn't so friendly as the regular bios was so I just flashed back so heat is normal again.

Does anyone use R290 in UEFI mode? I'm about to install windows again. This time i will try UEFI mode , is there any reason to use it in legacy mode?

Faster boot time in UEFI mode. Only reason to use legacy mode would be if you have a motherboard with no UEFI support at all.

I am not even sure either of the BIOSes is UEFI - but then again, there's no manual or anything, and I wasn't even aware there was a BIOS swith on the card, lol.
You're probably talking about the fast boot functionality available in Windows 8, right? You need UEFI VBIOS for that as far as I know.
