today i'm going to upgrade my cpu to the fx-8350.
my question is, should i format my hard drive? is it necessary?

If you're just upgrading the CPU, then no, you don't need to format anything.
I do however recommend installing the Windows Update for core parking on the FX CPU's.

no you dont need to format after cpu change.
you need to re-install windows when MB is changed.

Sadly no, the core parking is a manual update only, to prevent it from being installed on unsupported systems.

hey i just did it! applied the hotfix and everything, however the windows index shows a score of 7.7. mathragh can you confirm this? is something wrong?

p.s. now i'm running the cpu stability test and it load only 65% average of the cpu. again, is there something wrong?

7.7 out of 8 7.9 is good enough
my 8320 also is scored 7.7

That score seems to be fine, although I cannot confirm anything as windows 8.1 doesn't have the performance index built in anymore. However you might want to go to your bios and disable "Application Power Management", or APM. This can cause CPU frequency and usage to drop at times.

i have swapped out a CPU without having any windows issues but when I swapped out ram once (ddr2 800 to ddr2 1066) it caused some random hang ups and slowdowns that were only fixed after reinstalling windows. I can only assume the ram swap caused it but whatever the reason swapping ram caused issues but swapping video cards or CPUs haven't necessitated reinstalling windows for my system.

I don't know if its needed or not but I always reset bios anytime I replace any hardware
