EDIT: Stay away from Asus GPU Tweak - it's got some serious issues and will probably cause you blank screens on boot and any number of problems. The safest bet is MSI Afterburner Oc utility until Asus fix Gpu tweak (TPU member Octopuss has had serious issues with it as well)

I agree..I had an ASUS 4870 & 4890 a few years back and used the ASUS GPU Tweak utility with it which didn't work very well at the time. I'm currently just using CCC with my new ASUS r9 290x for fan speed controlling but plan to install the MSI Afterburner utility to further tweak my card if I want to.
I have the MSI Afterburner running on my wife's PC with a MSI GTX 760 4gb OC edition and it works very well.

EDIT !!! Important :-

I have found that this new Bios actually decreased my performance in FireStrike Benchmark. This was the score with the new bios

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1835663 (for some reason the overclocks on GPU dont show up on this benchmark - possibly new bios issue ?)

I flashed back the original Bios (available on the TPU VGA Bios database http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/153014/asus-r9290-4096-131222.html ) and my score went right up over 10k...

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1835731

Whilst not completely conclusive there is something really wrong with the new bios. I'll leave it up to you guys to try however thought you should be warned.... I also believe that this new bios compounds inherent problems with the Asus GPU Tweak utility.

If you have issues please report them on this thread - maybe we can get the attention of the Asus Rep on TPU. ( i have reported my issue to Asus support )

Thanks for the update, I haven't actually updated my DCUII's BIOS ever, is it necessary to update the factory BIOS to any version in particular?

Hey mate  It's not necessary however there can be performance improvements or increased compatibility with the operating system and environment variables etc. In this case it was the opposite :banghead:, at least in my particular situation.

I do not want to take this thread off topic but if you will allow me to please ask a few questions regarding this specific card. I just ordered this card but I can return it.

1) Can this card be flashed to a 290x bios?

2) I am currently running 2 6970 in crossfire. Is it worth the upgrade in performance etc or should I just hold off till the next gen AMD cards?

Thanks in Advance!

Hey mate :)

1. The card can be flashed to a R9 290X Bios. I did it myself and found nil performance gains. In fact, with benchmarks in Firestrike my numbers dropped quite a bit. This situation is different to those that purchased reference reference R9 290 cards late last year and found they could be unlocked to full R9 290X cards via a bios flash ( apparently due to a shortage in supply from AMD ).

2. As for possible performance gains in upgrading to this card from your 2 6970 crossfire i would look at reviews on this card and check out the benchmarks in current games like BF4 etc and compare it to what you are currently getting :)

Here is a review for you to look at http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_radeon_r9_290_directcuii_oc_review,1.html

Have fun :)

P.S i'm getting solid 60FPS on Ultra Settings (VSync ON) in BF4 even in 64 man maps. That's with 4x MSAA... There are very few fps dips with heavy particle effects though these seem to happen less with the 14.2 beta drivers - so I believe it's a case of further optimisation required from Dice/AMD with future driver releases. My system is running at 4.8 Ghz on CPU i5 3570k and the Asus R9 290 DC2 OC is at 1160 core 6500 memory. I don't get any throttling and I use Radeon Pro with Overdrive activated running always at highest clock settings.

Hope this helps :toast:

Thanks mate appreciate the response. Great review btw. I just wish there there were side by side comparison, can't find any . I use a 37" Westinghouse monitor @ 1920x1080. Again at that resolution I just don't know if I can justify $500.

Hey chap very welcome ! Are you from Tazzie ? I'm from Brisbane myself :)

Yeh i'm running at same resolution as yourself. What games do you play ?

I'm going to grab another one and run BF4 at 120hz on my samsung monitor (Vsync ON) :pimp:

120 FPS is way buttery smooth with VSync On.

Hey brother, from USA, New Jersey to be specific. :)

I pretty much play BF4 atm and have Titan fall preloaded.

Hey grand USA hey ? I was way off - it was your TPU name that made me think Tasmania

What sort of FPS do you get with your current setup in BF4 and at what quality settings do you run the game at ? Maybe we can work out if it's viable to upgrade to the R9 290 based on your current experience.

Titanfall ! Next on my game list !!!!!

Hahaha, yea just a random screen name chosen years ago.

Honestly never measured FPS, but I run the game on Ultra settings and it is smooth. As sad as this sounds I'm just pissed that mantle will not work on my rig and before my cards are totally ancient I figured I'd sell them while they were worth something.

Ha ha fair enough !!! Yes the mantle api also swayed me to invest in the R9 290 series card. Re: selling the cards - great time to do it hey - i sold my HD 7970 for $25 less than what I purchased it for !! Sounds crazy hey !!

I would encourage you to upgrade for sure :peace: If you like, grab Fraps or Radeon Pro and measure some fps and we could compare the results between your current setup and the Asus R9 290 DC2 OC.

Here is my latest Firestrike benchmark - i'm very happy with it :toast:

EDIT !!! Important :-

I have found that this new Bios actually decreased my performance in FireStrike Benchmark. This was the score with the new bios

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1835663 (for some reason the overclocks on GPU dont show up on this benchmark - possibly new bios issue ?)

Get the clock right before comparing bios vs new bios .. no shit your score is low.. it wasn't even clocked the same in your bench posts lol

Hey fullinfusion  How are you man ? Enjoyed reading your posts on the MSI cards :)

Yes with the clocks in that benchmark and the new Bios I had GPU-Z running and the clocks were reading the same as in both my benchmarks for validation. For some reason futuremark sysinfo was reading stock. Overclocks were applied via MSI Afterburner and checked in GPU-Z.

Doing good my man, wasn't shitting on your post but pointing out the obvious. Did you remove the amd driver before flashing? And Msi ab? If not then I would tbh. These cards are funny that way.

Let me show you what my score screen said after flashing a 290x bios to a 290
card. And erocker don't give me the.dp speech as the browser app is fubar. Brb with.a.few links.

Edit: this phone is pissing me off. Remove the driver and try again.
when i get home on my pc ill show yu what what im talking about.

Hey no didn't even think that - was a good point to bring up. Yes I always use DDU to remove drivers prior to a bios flash and remove my card and re-insert into PCI-E slot before fresh driver install :)

This particular issue was with the new Asus r9 290 bios rather than indicative of other cards manufacturers.

Yes, I would like to see what results you get with the r9 290 and then r9 290x MSI bios at the same clocks ! Didn't have any improvements with the Asus 290x bios :banghead:

same here, nada but more heat. I have an msi rep working on a custom bios for me so I dont need.the.app to sit at 1007mhz I just need to grab the S/N and theres a guy that has the tools msi gave him to change the bios. each bios is made for just that card and cant be passed onto someone else.with the same gpu as each.card is really different one way or other.

Got my card today! This thing is a Beast! Compared to my 6970 reference cards.

Funny thing tried benchmarking FPS in BF4 before uninstalling them before installing the 290. So in Ultra mode with 6970 crossfire the game would lockup after a minute or so, maybe the 14.1 drivers (they ran fine on 13.12 drivers) & I'm on 14.1 V3 beta. Anyway gave up, stuck in the 290 set to ultra and enabled mantle and games runs great. Sucky thing is I don't see anymore eye candy with mantle then running DX11 with 6970 crossfire.

Do love the card though, going to try and sell my 2 6970s for $400 :)

:rockout: Woo hoo !!! Very excited for you mate ! Glad to hear you like it - it's a very solid card for sure !!! I'm happy to hear there are no lock-ups now for you. I think you should have no problems selling your two 6970's. Maybe someone will want them on TPU ?

Let me know what sort of stable overclocks you get :toast: Are you running the 14.2 V1.3 drivers now ?

same here, nada but more heat.

Hey that's great service from the MSI Rep - kudos to him ! I'd love to have clock values and voltages edited in my bios to do away with software clocking tools. The Stilt on the lightcoin forums is doing custom Bios for 290 (x) although they are obviously optimised for crypto-currency. I might PM him on the forums to see if he can do me a custom Bios with tighter memory timings and lower Vdroop ( like the guys do on the KingPin forums ).

Let me know how you go :peace:

Done friend request sent.

Also let me know if you reflash your card to the updated bios and if you numbers improve. I'll hold off and wait for you to report.

Thanks!

I'm going to flash the 290X bios later today and fool around with benchmarking. :D
