USB 3.0 PCI Card Working Properly?

I recently modified an unused Apple Power Mac G5 case to hold my PC. I figured I would take the opportunity to purchase a USB 3.0 PCI Card (HooToo HT-PC002) considering my PC is a couple years old and I do not have the funds to build a new PC as of now. I purchased this cheap little PCI Card and hooked it up to a new Front Panel USB/Media Card Bay (nMediaPC ZE-C288) via the 19 pin extender to the 2 USB 3.0 ports in the front. I had installed the software/firmware drivers that came with the PCI Card and everything said it was completed Okay.

The only USB 3.0 device I currently have is my Corsair 32 GB Flash Drive and I tested it but it only transferred a few 1GB files around normal USB 2.0 speed (30-40mbps). Anyway was just wondering if I am missing something, as in do I have to activate anything on the device? Below is a screenshot of my Device Manager under the USB Tree, it shows a "VIA USB 3.0 Root Hub". I am hoping to pickup a new USB 3.0 external drive soon to replace my current 500gb Free Agent Drive which I WISH was 3.0... but I got it on sale years ago.

If this can give anyone an idea if I have setup everything properly (I don't know how I couldn't.... it was a simple connector to the PCI Card's pins) please let me know. The USB 3.0 PCI Card was cheap and I figured it would help the lifespan and worthiness of this old PC for the time being. And the Front Panel Bay was a cool pickup to give me access in the front. I also flashed/updated my Bios to it's latest release, I checked my Bios settings under the USB section and saw nothing regarding "SuperSpeed" just the regular Hi/Full-Speed. If anyone knows how I can test the speeds out it would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

I transferred about 23gb and it had an average of about 55-60mbps... it started out quicker.. so I am assuming these speeds are higher than USB 2.0.....

Hi

How about plugging the flash device in to one of the 6 usb 2.0 on the back pannel and running the test again; see if there is a difference in transfer rate.

It gets about the same type of speeds. I am wondering if my motherboard is just too old to withstand 3.0's speeds at all. Thankfully the PCI card I purchased wasn't expensive, I am just still trying to figure out if it is capable of working or not, especially now that I have it connected to the front panel bay as the 2 main USB 3.0 ports are in the back. I do only have this one USB Corsair Survivor 3.0 flash drive that is USB 3.0. I formatted it, changed it from Fat32 to NTFS, still the speeds all look the same. Oh well...

I have this card in one of my devices below (Frankenrig), and IIRC, there was not only the driver to install, but also another piece of software too. I'm gonna have to look through the reviews on Newegg to remember, when I get a chance, because that's where I found the information. Once I did that it operated perfectly.

BTW, it's a great card and highly rated! As to your USB stick, I don't know if it applies to USB 3.0 sticks, but with USB 2.0 sticks, I think the exFAT format had the fastest speeds, over NFTS and FAT.

EDIT: There is not only thie listed driver, there is this firmware upgrade listed on the front page there on the Egg:

"b. You also need to download the latest VIA VL800 USB host controller upgrade driver for Win7/8 from VIA website:http://via-labs.com/en/support/downloads.jsp#firmware."

Thanks rtw, I am going to try installing that driver. For my Flash Drive, I have never used exFAT, actually never even noticed it. I am going to format it to that and try some transfers.

As for any type of download/driver on the egg's site I do not see any, I did go to the PCI Card's manufacturer's site and download and install whatever the latest firmware/driver they had on their page (I think I did can't remember now). I got a response from the guys who created my frontpanel USB about directions to correctly install it and I did everything right. I am thinking about converting one of their fan switches to by my PC's power button, but I don't know if I feel like popping the knob out and properly placing my power button through it. Honestly I never use the power button, it just looks silly hanging on a wire out of the front panel. I've got my new front panel USB/media reader locked down pretty firmly, it's sideways a tad bit but I don't care I can always perfect it later.... I still have not clamped on my new back panel which I have been too lazy to get around to since Titanfall came out :p

I am downloading the following driver and will install it:

80.5 MB/s is definitely USB 3.0 speeds.

"USB 2.0 was released in April 2000 (now called "Hi-Speed"), adding higher maximum signaling rate of 480 Mbit/s (effective throughput up to 35 MB/s or 280 Mbit/s)

Okay while under ExFat my device only seemed to transfer my test 21GB that I have been testing with at an average of 50MBps or so. The drivers are almost done downloading, I'll see what they can do.

Is that transferring to the USB drive or from the USB drive?

Copying off the drive will always be faster than copying to it.

Run a benchmark instead of copying a file to get a better idea if you are getting the correct speeds.

Also, remember I said I am unaware of whether or not exFAT helps with USB 3.0. I only know it's faster with USB 2.0, as I have not run any tests yet on USB 3.0.

I installed the updated drivers and I saw my 1st transfer (NTFS) started around 135mbps and was at that for awhile but has dropped down to 30mbps... The average always seems to fall between 30-50mbps.

I was transferring from my 2TB hard drive to the USB 3.0 device... Thanks FX-GMC I was wondering if there was a USB benchmark tool, I will download that and try it out!

Yes, you're running at USB 3.0 speeds, it's your flash drive that's kind of slow. I have many different ones, and I benchmark them all.
USB Melee_0001.jpg

The only drives that have decent speed are the 32GB Sandisk Extreme, and the 128GB PNY. Even recent 3.0 thumb drives are mostly pretty slow, because they use cheap components. The Extreme uses what amounts to an SSD controller to achieve those speeds, as do a few very other high priced drives. The Extreme is best bang for buck, especially when you catch one on sale.

Very nice, my primary HD is a Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 2TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s which I know is not the fastest of hard drives but it was cheap and I have a lot of games installed so it does the trick, when I can spring for a Solid State I'll eventually get one to replace this current one.

Here is one run on CrystalMark so far...

CORSAIR Survivor Stealth 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSS3-32GB

USB 3.0

I'm glad to finally find a Benchmark utility so tyvm I appreciate it. I feel much better knowing that my purchase didn't go for nothing as the speeds are 3.0 quality, despite the flash drive I have being a little slow but whatever it's quite alright I can always spring for another one day.

I tried the UASP/Turbo but it didn't seem to change anything, wasn't really sure what the UASP utility device was that got installed with the newest VIA drivers...

Good to see you got it figured! And remember, you're always going to see slower write speeds with flash memory than read speeds.

Thanks again for the information, I learned a lot going through this post. I hope I can find a cheap USB 3.0 Flash Drive, but if it's not a good price for 32GB+ then it's probably worth saving my money towards something with good benchmark reviews and ratings. I believe I will probably invest in a portable hard drive that is USB 3.0, I love my current one it's so convenient to switch whatever computer I am using it on and it especially comes in handy when having to carry on a job or simply to help out a friend if they need backups of stuff they have and want to format or just get a new computer. I would love to buy a SSD now but I am not sure if the prices have dropped at all as last time I looked for one they were quite expensive for a mere 120GB drive. I know the only thing that holds down my silly Windows Experience score is the speed of my current drive, which to be honest isn't worth replacing because I got it cheap and it's 2TB which is incredibly nice having as a primary drive because all my games from Steam and now Titanfall and more. I couldn't use up 2TB unless I really really tried. Thanks again guys and I hope to finish off the final touches of my modified G5 case now that everything I need is inside and working properly :)

1. the cheap USB 3.0 drive: I had the opportunity to play a bit with some budget USB 3.0 drives and I currently own: Kingston DataTraveler R3.0 and it's crushing skulls for the money. It is a pretty balanced drive with read and write. I get 198 mb/s read and 45 mb/write, BUT this varies greatly. On my friends PC the same drive writes with 90+ mb/s, so it's something my USB 3.0 port (aahh Lenovo business class...).

2. If you are looking for a cheap entry into SSD for your personal PC, I'd say have a look at what Sandisk on Amazon, they have AMAZING discounts seriously- right now their ultra drive is 46% discounted. Even with delivery, its still a great deal hands down. Actually as I am speaking I saw the 256GB model goes for 92 pounds and I got myself one. Did not see this one coming. :)

Wow that Kingston 64gb looks pretty legit, I see it priced for only about $50usd... still a little too much for me to spend right now just for another flash drive. I would much rather invest towards a SSD but still some of the prices are still up there. I am guessing 92 pounds may be accurate to what I am seeing on the egg.... 92 = about $150usd which I see for a couple 256gb Sandisk drives right now. But I guess in the long run maybe it would be worth it? I would love to see the boost one would give this system since .

I remember our crappy Lenovo desktops had SSD's installed and they were pretty great despite only offering 120GB of space, but for office PC's we didn't need much space, it was actually quite sad seeing them being wasted as the desktops were so outdated or banged up... the company I was at just tried to save pennies at every turn, yet still invested into the SSD's which was funny because the work desktops were just god awful and our 1 man IT dept had no idea what he was doing half the time.

As I said the only thing holding my Windows Experience Index score down is my HD because it's "slow"... but honestly it's quick enough for me to game on so I've never complained, and it's held a LOT of games I've installed being a total of 2TB, I still have more than 1TB available and I've literally downloaded and installed every game I have ever owned hehe. I keep all my media on my portable USB 2.0 Seagate FreeAgent 250GB which I always keep about 70GB available on in case of any emergencies on my end or for someone else, having the same model FreeAgent from Seagate w/ same 250GB at USB 3.0 would be nice to pickup. I'll just have to decide on what to grab first... I'm leaning towards a SSD as I can always dual boot Windows in case it either doesn't impress me... or can't hold the selective few games I want to play off of it. Titanfall takes up about 40GB, I wouldn't know if some of these new games would fill up a SSD too quickly. I would certainly spring for the 250GB sized ones to be safe.

I know the Windows Scores are stupid, but everything I have is a 7.1 or higher, the Seagate Barracuda ST2000DL003 2TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s holds my Index score down to a 5.9, which is lame considering my incredibly old AMD Phenom 9850 CPU gets a 7.1, 8GB G.Skill DDR2 RAM gets a 7.3, and graphics from the lower end of the Nvidia Cards nowadays my Geforce GTX 550 TI gets a 7.4 for both Graphics indexes. The highest scores are 7.9 which doesn't seem too far off if a new SSD came into play. I know Microsoft grading means p00p, but it is nice to see a high score. I always like to snoop around on my friends' computers to see what type of scores they get. Quite honestly very few friends have better graphics cards than I do, and if so it's because they have unlimited amounts of money and just buy pre-built PC's with top of the line graphics. I just see no reason to upgrade my system to anything else, I have it running steady 4 Cores @ 2.5ghz, always stable, never crashes (crosses fingers), and I've been beating the crud out of her lately thanks to my Titanfall purchase last week. It doesn't seem PC games are shooting for unbelievable graphics anymore, if if they are I don't notice because my video card must actually get the job done well. I always say that when I eventually get a game that my system can't play, the first thing I would do is invest in a new video card. I've been playing a lot of Titanfall on PC and my friends XB1. The XBox 1 clearly has that already stated "10%" better/increase in graphics compared to my PC game. I never touched the video settings on my copy of Titanfall for PC maybe I can adjust them, but I believe the developers did the right thing and simply created a wonderful game and didn't bog down everyone's PC's with unnecessary graphics. I think that the copy of Titanfall that comes out for Xbox 360 will be very similar to the PC copy compared to the XB1 copy. But we shall see, I could see the 360 version having better graphics than the PC.... I just haven't ran into many PC games that have blew me away in the past couple years, even Diablo III was kind of lame. Oh well sorry, not sure why I started talking about games and graphics...
