when should i buy intel i7 2600k

I have checked online people comparing i5 2500 with i7 2600k and most of them prefer i5 2500 over i7 2600k. I think mainly because 8 cores are hardly used by any app.

I am looking for pc for doing visual studio programming and i think i5 2500 would be good enough with 8 GB RAM.

Would you prefer "i5 2500 with 8 GB RAM" over "i7 2600k 16 GB RAM"?

In my office there are a lot of Intel B840 with 4GB RAM PC running Visual Studio just fine.

I would prefer i7 only if the price difference is insignificant.
2600 vs 2500 performance difference, in my opinion, is negligible for most tasks. And if you acquire 2500 K version usually you can overclock it higher than 2600K (CMIIW).

The same can be said to RAM. 8GB of RAM is pretty much current gold standard and difference to 16GB could be very very minimal. As far as I know, Visual Studio running/compile faster with faster CPU than greater RAM.

I actually thinking the same few months ago (2500 8GB or 2600 16GB). I choose the latter though, because I got nice deal and because it has more oomph xD

Is it correct that visual studio 2010 or 2012 only uses single core unless parallel build feature is being used.

Software is changing fast, id go with the 2600K personally.

The programs I use last yr only support 4/6cores, 12months later they now support 8/12cores.

i think 2600k can be sold on higher price as compare to i5 2500 in the future.

1. as far as I know, yes, they're using single core unless maximum parallel build is used (they can use as many core as you wish).
Even so, I think 2500 is good enough (difference with 2600k is just 100mhz and HyperThreading) and using faster HDD or SSD will certainly help as much if not even better.
FYI VS is reading and writing many files.

Both CPUs are 4 core processors. Don't get cores and threads confused.

I only had problems with my i5 2500K when I was researching video quality metrics. Nothing a i7 2600K would have fixed though. It's still a good CPU.
If you can get the i5 significantly cheaper than the i7, it's OK. Else, go for the i7.
The difference if you can't use the HT however is almost non-existant.
