I tried reseting the battery (dismount / hold power button 60sec)

Maybe it needs a new power cable, or new battery, but Im posting because the power in the laoptop is running fine.

My first guess is the hdd needs replacing.

The computer had a nasty nasty viruses. My moms computer she would not reinstall OS. She ended up giving to my sisters friend and came back with this problem.

She bought a new computer and said I can have this computer.

I dont remember are there any free ways I can test my hdd without a tool? My friend has all tools necessary but lives 2 hrs away if I can help not making that trip

Thanks TECHS

Will it boot into bios?
If so load defaults and then reformat it.

No Bios. Nothing.

Power on > Blank screen > fans running > power light on > Blank screen > fans keep running full throttle

My guess is its an hdd issue, but maybe it could be under a warranty? Mostly likely not it is 4 years old. I think most warranties are around 1 year. Hdds arent cheap, what if its a RAM failure?

Try plugging a monitor into it and see if it gets a signal.

No that didnt change anything.

Black screen, power lights on, fans running > Black screen, charge lights on

.....hard drive or RAM...

Its an L655D Toshiba 64 bit

This is the motherboard for it http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Laptop,Part,A000076380.aspx

Honestly to buy anything other than a new hdd or RAM I think would end up cheaper in the long run to buy a new laptop. Id like to salvage this one somehow and use it until then. Everything was fine and then my sisters friend did something. Ill find out what he did

Thanks everyone. We took it to a shop today and Im not sure what they did but its back on now. They told my bf they replaced the motherboard and when he brought it back he said they only charged him $85 for the whole thing. I opened it up and its the same motherboard so hes going to call tomorrow and find out what is going on.
