Thanks dude, I play mostly hardcore and tend to agree. I rarely snipe anymore. Most sniping is done by straight pull bolts and standing up strafing which is far from realistic long range engagement. While I was sniping a lot the idea would be to maximize distance from target, range the rifle and have a spotter/ co marksman. Now people do it because you don't need a headshot for that 1 hit kill on hardcore. Unfortunately the netcode is so bad now that at long ranges lately everything just rubber-bands around making these kind of shot very hard.

Like all of us I'm hoping for a miracle with today's patch release on both client and server side.

I tried sniping last week and just like you said the rubber=banding was aggravating to say the least. So I switched over to assault and had more fun that way for a bit. Great video, I should to try a bipod setup on recon. Do you mind sharing your setup for the srr-61?

Sure thing bud.
Scope: Ballistic 40x (20x would work find too, just use one you like or are used to)
Barrel: No attachment/ flash hider ( the others wont help when using bi-pod/regular bolt)
Other: Range finder or 14x variable zoom (range finder max distance is 999m which kinda sux for super long range, but it can help dialing in the weapon)
Other: Bi-pod (keeps it realistic and fun, makes you a much better shot. You'll be more careful with the trigger and get better much quicker than the straight pull silliness)

So the 14x variable zoom can help with acquiring targets/shorter ranges as well as spotting which is critical for you team. I use the range finder because to spot and identify enemy snipers I use the PLD which works great. The best way to approach this is by finding good spots on the maps and pre-ranging your rifle. One way is to use the range finder and then zeroing your scope to the desired distance and keeping it constant, just like in real life. You make a mental or physical chart of places on the map and your mil-dot adjustment for that area. With netcode the way it is you need a stationary target most of the time. Another way is to use the ambush method where you place the round ahead of the target using prediction and essentially have the target placing himself in front of it on his own. Like leading a target, this is hard now because netcode updates your screen at about 10fps while your prolly running 60+fps and at those distances it get very jerky/ rubber-bandy so stationary targets is where its at.

Another thing that makes it more fun and effective is to work with a team. A spotter/co-marksman is a huge advantage, they help acquire targets and can help defend against counter snipers. One person can roll with a long range setup and the other a shorter range scope to aid with tunnel vision and other threats. The 2 man element is ideal. They can also help you dial the rifle in, letting you know if your high or low and by how much if you need to re-chamber a round fast. This is also super fun with a buddy of course.

Here is an older video that is more long range based with many shots way past the range finders capabilities. I know this post is longer than what you probably wanted to know but it was fun putting this stuff in writing.

Seems the patch is R32 and is only a patch for the server side.

R32 Server Update Notes
-Fix for an issue where the player could get stuck in a loading screen on a server that had an uneven number of slots
-Fix for the Live Scoreboard that would be active without a game on a server.

Wow! That is one hell of a change log, lol!

Super thanks for the extra strategy write-up. I'm getting better at sniping but mostly at close to mid-range encounters with a 8x and 14x variable attachment. Yeah the BF4 "netcode" really is horrible for moving target kills [by far my favorite sniping moments from BFBC2 and BF3]. So far I've used the 40x but always found it to be much magnification for me. Somehow I still don't have the 20x yet.

Appreciate the info and the video, can't wait to try your setup for long-range recon. Nice how some of the kills were not even spotted!!

BC2 was my first "first person shooter" I tried to be a long range marksman. The barrier of entry was reasonable. There was no lens flare but you could not prone/bi-pod. So it made the rifle used very important. Some swayed more than others and holding breath/timing became a skill to master. The maps were awesome too, especially the rush ones. I play all classes and enjoy them a fair bit. BF3 I took a back seat on sniping as the maps to me catered more toward dealing with vehicles and closer quarters combat. I sniped just enough to unlock all the rifles. I consider myself a well rounded player and I believe every class can be very fun when played to its role. As much as I love DICE and the graphics of BF4 I will refrain from pre-ordering BF5 until I get word they fixed the netcode.

I wish DICE/EA would come clean. What I mean by that is, they promised not to release DLC till the game was solid. That lasted a month and now 2 more DLC later we are still in the same spot other than servers and clients don't crash anymore for most people. If this was fixable they would have done it but I think it is not possible and EA has ordered to finish the DLCs and move on to BF5/BC3. So I believe the netcode is inherently broken and unfixable and because of this I wish EA would come clean and tell us... we deserve it. And to make up for it there is no way the Premium should still be $50. The status quo suggests that $20 is much more reasonable. Other than that I still like the game but found myself play less as time goes on.

I agree with you and mostly play infantry as that works usually. There are some servers out there that have rules and restrictions such as 3 snipers per side max. One is tacticalgamer. I like hardcore mainly because of the more realistic feel in many departments but it draws too man DMR/sniper one hitters so a good balance created good gameplay. I am praying that BF5 or BC3 get these issues solved and can have the same visual features because to be honest BF4 for how good it looks is a really well optimized game... graphically.

I'm not used to sniping, but when i was doing the assignment for the fj-ys I did learn a few things. Since I'm not used to sniping, I'm used to moving in and around the map and most of my engagements are less than 150m. When I was trying to complete the assignment, I was using the 6x with the gol and the srr and the thing I noticed that helped me was to keep on the perimeter of the battlefield. One example was that I would spend a lot of time at the A flag (if I was on the US) and snipe the people on the tower at C. I made sure to not to move up much further past A or D flags and I would usually get myself shot by some one with an automatic gun.

I for one can not sit down at one spot and just shoot people (unless I'm on a flag) as I feel like I'm not helping my team. That's just me though and I can appreciate effective snipers who are riding the enemy bush wookies that allow me to move freely about the battlefield with our having to play hide from the recon sniping from the hill.

Any one know hot to get voip working all the time?

Some times it will work just fine. Other times people will tell me all they hear is clicks. I've tried leaving a game and returning but it does not seem to fix it.

BFBC2 with the AS VAL was sooo excellent and sniping in general too with the GOL. Different to how the guns work in BF3/BF4. Not saying bad but just different and probably why many players have moved over to other guns in the series. I love the M98B but cannot beat the SRR-61's lower bullet drop - especially for myself who never really uses the PLD.

DICE/EA can't come clean with a broken product and risk a lawsuit, so they just play their game of "updates" sadly.

I hear you about waiting and seeing on BF5/BF:police. I almost don't want Dice to work on BFBC3 with how badly BF4 turned out.

Again, some excellent sniping videos - I watched them a few times. Where are you ranked worldwide?

My time playing recon has been spent in close to mid-range encounters probably like you, usually a little behind a recently captured/forward base. I love to spot enemies like no ones business to help out the team always. I can appreciate the long range sniping Flibolito does and plan to try it as a challenge of playing a different recon role.

I get the feeling to that sometimes as recon I'm not "helping" the team but usually when there are too many snipers hanging back, I switch to another class to capture bases.

Very impressive sniping. I usually hate snipers, but you bring it to a whole nother level, much respect.
I remember trying my hand at sniping in BFBC2, running around like crazy with the Val, loved running and gunning as a sniper.

Old battlefields may be affected by the GameSpy servers shutting down:

After the new patch ?

It seems but the patch was server side and not a client patch. I just played a Dom map with about 750 tickets, the game had 53 tickets left and poof my computer froze with a buzzing sound this time, no RSOD. I had to do a hard reset that time.

Any one know why the sound in my recording sounds off? I'm using MSI Afterburner with pretty much the default settings. I tried tweaking around with them last night, but nothing change the poor sound in the recording.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the game is being recorded on you microphone and its picking up your speakers. There should be some audio settings in afterburner to let you adjust which channel. Not sure if you can have two channels at the same time. I use Dxtory and use 2 separate channels. One for game/skype audio the other for my headset mic. and adjust levels independently.

I thought this a combo server and PC patch, that is what they made it sound like last week.
