Hi guys, I just bought an xfx r9 280x and it won't idle to idle clocks. For some reason it idles @ 500mhz gpu and 1500mhz memory. The bios of the card is the latest I know off 015.43. From the research that I found that clock speed is for multi-monitor. I only have 1 monitor plugged in @ 1080p. I uninstalled and installed various drivers from 13.12 to 14.3 to the new 14.4. I used both amd uninstall version 1.2.1 and the new one from their site which 1.4. I do not have apps running in the background. I didn't install afterburner to manually clock it down. I do have amd overdrive installed for my CPU but even when it's uninstalled it still runs at that speed. Idk what else to do to drop my clocks to the real idle speed.

Just an update, I tried erocker's advice twice and the issue is still not resolved. I contacted XFX and they said this:

This doesn't sound like an issue, it doesn't Have to idle that low, it will idle at what it determines is normal for your specific system.

Here is a screenshot of my card @ idle.

Unless you have something requiring the use of any graphics power. (3D graphics in browsers, Aero, blahblah) this is normal. This is to lighten the power usage when there is no load. The only time you should be worried is if the clock speeds don't go back to stock under load.

In the first gpuz ss, the "gpu clock" should read 1000, not 500, regardless of idle/load. Sounds like driver software issues.

But have you tried flipping the bios switch and checking to see if that makes any difference. If no, give it a go. (I'm assuming there's a bios switch)

Thanks for the reply manofthem, unfortunately Xfx didn't include the bios switch in my card. Also, my Msi 6950 that was replaced would show its idle speed like on the first gpuz ss. I feel like it is also the driver but after going through many drivers and methods of uninstalling, it still shows those speed. Thank You for trying to help me out.

Hi Slacker Thank you!
I found that in your BIOS increased minimum frequency.
Is connected with the problem of R9 series cards at minimum frequencies GPU - 300 Mem C-150 flicker 2D. AMD Catalist itself increases the frequency of GPU 300 >>> 500

do you run more than 1 screen?

do you overclock the hz of your screen?

both of those will raise the idle clocks too.

Its interesting what yo found there crystrik. I didnt tweak that bios at all. All I did was grab it out of gpuz. Still i do not like clocks that high at idle. It just makes unnecessary heat. I'll probably check up with XFX on it. To answer marsey's question, I am only running 1 monitor at stock 60hz setting at 1080p.

You can not lower the frequency they are inflated in your Bios!

Check your motherboard makers site for newer bios and drivers, ensure you have all windows updates, remove gpuz completely and install it again

Hey eidairaman1, I just did what you told me and it still shows the same thing. If crystrik is right that XFX is the one who changed the idle clocks on this latest bios thats on my video card then it is running normal at high idle speeds.

Hey CRYSTRIK, What type of monitor and how many of them are you running? Anyways, if CRYSTRIK is right then that means I just have to deal with the idle speeds.

Thank You all for your replies and help.

I'm not having any graphical troubles on idle or load. It's just the wasteful heat and power consumption that I don't like.

Ive heard of other makers increasing clock rates slightly to fix graphical errors that occur on screen during minimal load.

I guess I haven't done my full research regarding clock rates for several video card vendors. It seems to high though for idle especially the memory.
