This time i've decided not to review another VGA or CPU battle. It's RAM this time.

I knew that 4 Gb of RAM these days is not enough for some games on X64 Windows, but i was always wondering what is the advantage of 16 Gb vs 8 Gb RAM in gaming?

To those who are inpatient to look, i tell you this now: 16 Gb RAM is a waste of money.

Made a video presentation. 18 games benchmarked.

except I run Crysis 3 on my amd rig with 4gb and practically everything maxed. so "will not run" is not true. the 3gb 7950 is what makes it possible.

I will test coh2 and cop today, but my suspicion is that they will run fine. what do you mean by "will not run" specifically?

Dude you should see a Minecraft mod pack that a friend of mine made. I've seen it suck up 6GB of ram. Though if you fiddle with the settings it can run on 4GB of ram.

Definitely not true. I ran all these games with 1280 Mb GeForce GTX570 and of them ran with 8 Gb of RAM on same settings.

what do you mean by "will not run" specifically?

I've got a yellow Windows pop-up with a warning "not enough memory".
So ye, 4 Gb was not enough for Crysis 3, Stalker COP or COH 2. Perhaps my PC used more memory for other tasks, therefore it gave an error, but the bottom line is this: 4 Gb is not recommended and is definitively not a standard these days.

Interesting, thanks. Would you mind posting the results as PNGs also?

I used to do that before, but it really takes time, and i've decided to save my life time by doing things more simple.

have you tried it with a 3 gb video card?

only calling bs on someone like that is an interesting stance when their results differ from yours.

yeah and i run them with 4gb on the 7950. so if it wasn't possible with your 570 & 4gb but it is with my 7950 and 4gb what is the difference do you think?
I've got a yellow Windows pop-up with a warning "not enough memory".
which i don't get, with 4gb ram, on crysis 3 or coh 2

perhaps, but the simple fact is you said it DOESN'T WORK. that's totally different than not recommended or not standard. my main rig is 8gb and my gaming is 12gb, my htpc is only 4 but i can run all the games on that i can on the others with my 7950, with high-ultra settings with no issue.

long story short your information is wrong. just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean it doesn't work at all.

The difference is probably general computer memory management like: paging file, virtual memory distribution, integrated video card memory dedication, system protection. This is really not a video card problem, let's be over with this. These games might run just fine on other computers with 4 Gb of RAM, but RAM will be on the limit depending on how the PC manages that RAM for other tasks.

no. I'll be over it when you stop giving out false information and then refusing to recognize that fact. did you bother checking specs for the games you said don't work? if their specs say they should but you can't run them YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. here are the specs required by COP
Minimum System Requirements
  • Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz / AMD XP 2200+
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 128 MB DirectX® 8.0 compatible card / nVIDIA® GeForce™ 5700 / ATI Radeon™ 9600
Recommended System Requirements
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 / AMD 64 X2 5600+
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 512 MB DirectX® 9.0c compatible card / nVIDIA® GeForce™ 9800 GTX / ATI Radeon™ HD 4850
http://cop.stalker-game.com/?page=requirements

now you're seriously trying to say your video is accurate when it says COP won't run on 4gb, when i know i first played it on 4gb or less and the recommended specs are 2gb?

I appreciate the effort, but your method lacks validity, you are wrong and you are giving people incorrect information.

Crysis 3 w/4GB RAM... will not run? o_O My AGP based rig runs it just fine... at 1400x900 and with the aid of a third party DX10 patch mind you, but it runs with 3.37GB of slow-as-molasses DDR1 RAM (chipset limitation) on medium with some fine tunning (ambient oclusion disabled, no AA, etc).

Specifically with Stalker COP, most of the time the game loads with 4 Gb RAM, but from time to time i do receive low memory warnings. This ain't false information and a sense anger in your tone. I am just leting people know what can happen and what i do not recommend personally, but this is not a rule i force to obey on all of them.

My games were tested on MAX settings, 1920x1200 resolution.

I'm sorry, i was getting a little angry but that's because of your presentation and what seemed like a dismissal to my response. I appreciate that attitude, but it's nowhere in the video or your OP, and you say they "WILL NOT RUN". that's very different from "i had problems / don't recommend / whatever"

so i hope you can understand how i did not take it that way.

I can run all of those games with 4 Gb RAM if i lower the settings a bit, but i really maxed everything up, so that just might be the case...

so i hope you can understand how i did not take it that way.

Yes, i will include in the comments that it will not run on my machine, not on all PCs...

Can I also ask whether you did a fresh installation for each test? Based on past experience, it's very easy to run out of RAM when downgrading the RAM amount - I suspect Windows doesn't adjust its superfetching levels.
