it's sort of in this cubby thing in my desk with plenty of space and the fans suck in cool air from the front. but its louder and hotter than usual.

What brand TIM? How old is the TIM? It ain't drying out is it?

Dust, maybe, need a clean out?

Has Ambient temps changed?

Thanks for the suggestion. After about two minutes I get to 67-74 on the cores and it stays there. However, I am confused as my problem is occuring when I am using my computer as normal not under 100% load.

It's warm in my room today but not any more so than usual. My computer isn't that old I can't imagine it's dusty enough to cause problems. It is getting moved to my office in less than a month so I could give it a clean then.

I used the TIM that came with the CPU cooler I think? At work all day I refurbish OEM Dell/HP/etc computers from the Core2 era and the TIM isn't dry on there so why would mine be out yet? I'm sure my computer is cooled better than a 6 year old Dell that's never been dusted!

I have had some TIM that came with a processor that got rock hard in just a few months. And, I don't know your dust conditions.
Just some ideas...

Ugh I will wait to deal with it until I swap it out with my secondary PC with single monitor, and move my main computer with tripe monitors to the office. Until then a little more noise won't bother me.
If it persists after a thorough dusting I'll reapply TIM.

Thanks all - I wou;dn't have thought of the TIM thing because this computer is so new :/
