forgive me if this is the wrong subforum but i couldnt see a monitors/screens subforum.

Im thinking about going for a 1440p as i already have two 27" 1080p and id like to see what the rage is all about.

I was looking at the Ultrasharp U2713HM and the Asus PB278Q. Can anyone help me decide between the two or recommend a different option? i refuse to go for the korean monitors. i know theyre a great deal but i dont feel like gambling my money.

thanks

The Dell Ultra sharp's are very good. I have an older one but it is very crisp and colours are excellent.

thanks. the concern i have with the U2713HM is the backlight bleed issues, but it seems like its a dice roll on whether or not you get a monitor with the issue or not. I know that IPS is going to have some edge glow but the pictures i was seeing on Amazon were way more than the norm.

I would take the IPS Dell. Have you considered the LG 34um95 or similar 21:9 resolution?

I'd go for the LG 34UM95 which is basically a 21:9 3440x1440 monitor :), it's gonna set you a bit more than those but it'll be worth it.

yeah, 21:9 isnt conducive to my sitting style and the way i compute though.

id like to stick with 16:9 or 16:10, but thank you for the suggestion.

No, they drop frames, unless you get an X-Star/Qnix.

@srsparky32

either one I think will suit you just fine. If you get the Dell and the backlight bleed is just to much. give it like a week or so, and lower the brightness a bit. I did that with mine and its not even noticeable now. But if its way to much, RMA with dell. Their customer server and monitor return policy is great.

I am waiting for the Asus ROG SWIFT to hit the market possibly next month to see what owners have to say about it and whether G-Sync is worth the extra $$$. I've had my eye on the Asus PB278Q for quite a while now and if I don't get the SWIFT then I will definitely pick the PB278Q. It has some very good reviews and feedback from owners.

you'd be right on that one. IPS is too sweet to have to go back to a TN panel.

The PLS panels at least have been shown to not drop frames, often running up to 120hz. Dropped frames aren't the problem. The problem is there isn't enough bandwidth to get all the color info into the image at that speed. My PLS looked like shit until I stopped overclocking it, but most people overclocking them unfortunately seem incapable of seeing the difference. The panels can run at that speed, the PCBs can handle the speed, there's just some sort of chip, idk what the term is for it, that doesn't have enough lanes for that amount of info, and nobody seems to think there's enough demand for a 120hz IPS displays to design one.

Yeah I know. I wasn't suggesting the ROG SWIFT. The link is to the PB278Q he was looking at. To be honest it's taking a lot of willpower for me to not get that monitor right now. I've never had an IPS/PLS monitor and I'm impressed with what owners of them have to say about them. I probably will never consider a TN panel again afterwards either. EVGA GTX 780Ti Superclocked with ACX to go along with it. :)

once you set your eyes on an IPS monitor in your own house (not one you preview at best buy or frys) you'll never go back to TN. I'll probably end up getting the PB278Q. Comparing between it and the Ultrasharp, i dont see why i should spend $200 more for the same thing. I know i'll lose Dell's great policy and warranty, but honestly, Asus is quite consistent with their monitors.

Well, IPS (Dell) vs. PLS (Asus)

Dell uses IPS panel from LG
Asus uses PLS panel from Samsung

Not much of a difference, but according to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_PLS#Super_PLS

Benefits of PLS:

  • Further improvement in viewing angle
  • 10 percent increase in brightness
  • Up to 15 percent decrease in production costs
  • Increased image quality
  • Flexible panel

I havent seen a PLS, but if those are anything to go by, PLS sounds better than IPS. Seems like with the Dell you are paying for the service and name at this point. I have also heard complaints about the Dells matte finish. But meh, I have the same matte finish on my U2412M and its fine.

You can read all about it in that wikipedia link.

thanks for the link. i have no issue with matte finish, but too much would annoy me i think. the Asus has a "light" anti glare, and traditionally dell's anti glare coatings have been extremely heavy

Pricing: $799 USD

I bought my Samsung 4k for 699$ + 10$ shipping FedEx Express i got it after 2 days.

For G-Syng + 120mhz / 120 Fps on 1440p

you need minimum 2 780ti

1 780ti stock with all tax and shipping in my country cost 250~300$ more than not stock 290X

already 700$ just for G-YNCH Monitor

lol

How do you run your Samsung 4k? Displayport? 30/60FPS?

Yeah DP.

You can always set resolution lower... i didn't bought more cards bcuz it's unless now and 3 not going to be enough for AAA+ Titles anyway.

but almost all games works on Ultra x 1440p without any problems.

i had no idea that monitor refresh rates were measured in mhz and not hz. also i had no idea that 120hz was required to play games. 60hz is fine for any game unless you play css competitively. all you really need is a decent clocked 780 to run 1440p. and at that resolution you dont need much AA. and its silly to adopt 4k right now since its a very new tech.

also, what is G-Syng? I'm aware of G-Sync.

Ive owned a PB278Q for about 2 weeks. No regrets :toast: more pricey than korean monitors but at least the warranty is there.
