Hoping they make it fast paced again. UT2k4 is by far my favorite online FPS game. UT3 came out and it was boring, too slow, too vehicle focused. Great, now I'm feeling nostalgic, going to dig out 2k4.

Not really free to play. Its just a free game. no microtransactions and everything else that comes with run of the mill free to play games.

This is actually a genius plan from Epic Games. UT was always just kind of a way to showcase their newest Engine, so now they can make the outline of a game, and allow the people who always drove the community to take care of things like maps and possibly even game balance. It opens the door for some people to make a name for themselves by developing he most popular variation of the game, or for the competitive scene to finally have control over the game.

Dunno if its been mentioned yet but UT99 was a lot faster then all the other UT games that came after it.

UT99 was brootal, especially on smaller maps like Peak, Morpheus or the Liandri Core. And the blood pumping tracker music which sounds a bit retro these days, but has its own charm not reached by any OGG music that arrived later in UT200x or UT3. Razorback baby!

And i totally loved how all UT99 maps had some sort of theme and back story. From monastery on top of a mountain, three towers reaching into the orbit, a Phobos space station orbiting Mars (and the way how dramatic planets looked like when you were looking upon them), submarine base, base on the ocean floor or the legendary Facing Worlds map or the oil platform. Or the Sesmar Domination map that i played on and on in demo. Aaaaah the memories. Man, nostalgia shit is starting to affect me with this one...

I think the speed of the game was generally why i steered away from later games. Graphics were nicer but somehow the game lacked that true 'twitch shooter' aspect like UT99

They don't necessarily go together. PhysX is a physics engine that is normally used by the CPU. There might be GPU acceleration, but it's pretty rare nowdays.

They basically just need physics for ragdolls which are necessary and for Flak Canon shrapnels and grenades. Or the rocket launcher grenades bouncing around. Or the Biogun goo. Though i wonder why companies don't use Havok as much as they did before. In the past pretty much all games were Havok powered, but now i hardly recall any game. Though UT99's Karma engine had it's special feel as well. You know, weapons in low gravity or body parts flying through the low gravity fields hehe
