Crappy 4770k, should i ditch it?

It's because iVR is in chip, FPU = high usage, iVR heat soaks the chips. Most apps that actually use AVX don't give those higher temps, just stress tests do. Normal AVX load is usually about 10-15C above normal usage.

Then just use the current 4770K? buying a lesser chip won't let you OC for more performance ..it'll likely clock worse or the same, just with less compute threads.

I can either git rid of it now or I have to keep it for long time until I fund another use for it. the i3 is that I can have something to use until 4790k gets released - i know it cant be overclocked

Yeah
I build computers for displaying/recording streams from security cameras and I use i3s all the time, i7s very rarely.

From what I've read it seems that 4790k wont work in z87 boards, is that true?

I am not sure yet. Z97 socket does include a change for Broadwell, not sure of the entire impact yet. It might just be Broadwell that doesn't work in Z87. I will find out in the near future.

I really had my suspcisions about early chips oc'ing better because my i5-3570k purchased Jan 2013 sucked. 3770k purchased Sept 2013 sucked. Returned it for another 3770k which was even worse (about as bad as your 4770k). Bought a used chip and I can do 4.8 easily. All with the same motherboard.

Makes sense, Intel sells good chips early when all reviews are written and 6 moths later they sell all the crappy ones.

There is a problem: 4790k aka devils canyon is not really a new silicone is it?

Its binned and it will have a better IHS solution, not sure if that means better thermal paste, better lid design, or soldered on lid. 5 Ghz on air is the hype right now!

potato, I posted in your other thread but is it possible your die isn't fully covered with paste? I had issues with a GPU where the die wasn't fully covered therefore the temperature seemed okay but I was getting artifacts so it was obviously not cooling evenly across the die's face. Repasting with more thermal paste resulted in similar temperatures (good temps) but no artifacts at all. Therefore, maybe part of your core is covered and the rest isn't transferring heat?

When I do bare die stuff now I just put a blob (Shin Etsu x23), the result is usually better than small grain of rice.

By blob I mean I use about 2-3x the amount I would normally instinctively use, so maybe 3 grains of rice.

I'd get Z97 if I could. Just sayin'. 1 TB drives @ nearly 2 GB/s....hmmm YESSSSSSSS!!!!

Then there's that whole compatibility thing.. which will probably turn out to just be a dastardly marketing tactic...or not.

I am not technically selling it, i am using in a work build. So if I keep current board, i would have to buy another board for that work build and I`d rasher have something new for my self.
