Futuremark Announces 3DMark Sky Diver

Futuremark today announced 3DMark Sky Diver, a new DirectX 11 benchmark test for gaming laptops and mid-range PCs. 3DMark Sky Diver is the ideal test for benchmarking systems with mainstream DirectX 11 graphics cards, mobile GPUs, or integrated graphics. A preview trailer for the new benchmark shows a wingsuited woman skydiving into a mysterious, uncharted location. The scene is brought to life with tessellation, particles and advanced post-processing effects. Sky Diver will be shown in full at Computex from June 3-7, or find out more here.

Call me old and bitter, but this doesn't look impressive at all. It's like looking a skydiver rendered by the same engine that was powering Rage game. Even the rocks look exactly the same. Boooring.

The only 3DMark that actually impressed me was 2000 with that crazy water render in a pool at the end using graphic cards without any pixel shaders. And the amazing nature in 2001. I still remember all the grass and tree leaves swinging in a slightly windy sunny day. That impresses me even today every time i see it, because in all honesty, i haven't seen any game environemnt ever look like that. Not even in The Elder Scrolls games where nature is usually stunning.

I really would love a screen saver of that but without the fish. The fish where the only part of this test that wasn't so good looking.
Also the ocean test was really really good.

I found a video of 2000. Yes that last one was really good, maybe the only really impressive part of this benchmark.

I just removed all my 3DMark stuff last night. I was tired of trying to run things, and being nickel and dimed on updates and being forced to use my browser for results that wouldn't show due to some error. I updated everything for 3dmark2011, ran the benchmark and then got another error that I had to update a 3dmark system service, separately??! Never again.

Futuremark has totally mishandled benchmarking for the past 10 years. Now, we have piles of different versions, we can further ruin comparability with performance vs quality runs, older versions are totally abandoned and no longer useable.

Futuremark has totally lost sight of benchmarking.
