Well folks, any RTS fan should give PA a shot...at least when it's full release, if not now!

Anyone try the Space-based 4X Distant Worlds? The whole collection was just released recently on Steam and the distributor's website under Distant Worlds: Universe, currently on sale for $50. I don't know if it's worth it or not, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun and a massive time consumer.

I'm having a lot of fun in PA's Galactic War...it's pretty entertaining...sure a little rough around the edges yet as a newly added feature, but has A LOT of promise for offline players like me. Anyone else on TPU playing Planetary Annihilation at all? It's on sale for $29 on Steam...worth every penny even in Gamma imho. Though I must admit I'm biased as it's play style is something I find very entertaining.

So I was just looking at it in Steam, and it looks interesting. Is it Galactic Civilizations meets Total Annihilation? It kind of looks like it would be hard to give both genres ample due in one game.

Nah it's all real-time, the Galactic War maybe is a little Gal Civ...but there's not much 4x other than a little expand...it's all eXterminate. It's like SupCom/TA + Planets. The Galactic War part just got added last week...the core of the game is all sorts of RTS and SupCom/SupCom2/TA-like. It's got T1 and T2, no experimentals.

If you want to see it in action before you decide if it's worth your investment, go to ZaphodX's youtube page. He's one of the bigger names in eCasting for this title, and very active player as well. I learned a lot of strategies and how to improve my early build from him...I do get annoyed with his videos at times, but overall they're pretty good imho. They show the good and bad of the game in various stages from Alpha, Beta and Gamma stages. This title has one of the best communities I've seen in years for games I dedicate time to that is. Uber Entertainment is making waves with PA imho. It has potential to be big and be around for many years.

I just happened to notice that Homeworld Remastered went on pre-order on Amazon...for $99.99 for the collectors edition. I just want the games dammit! If I had money to burn I'd be tempted though! Here's the Homeworld page:

I yearn for Birth of the Federation to be remade. That and an actual solid follow up to Master of Orion II. 4X games are in the strategy gaming tread, no?

Have you checked out Distant Worlds? I've read of a lot of 4X fans loving it...and DW: Universe has the original and 4 expansions. It uses sprite graphics but has incredible depth and control to it. Might be worth checking out:

I haven't been playing a whole heck of a lot other than EVE Online and Diablo 3. I might have to check this out, thanks.

I bought it the other day...I am a sucker for RTS and space 4X games. Though I can't say TBS 4X has ever done it for me...that's where games like Distant Worlds is nice...you can pause whenever you want and it's RTS the rest of the time...you can control the game speed and so many different aspects to tune it to play and allow you to control whatever you want. Seems like a good time to me.

I've been watching a couple of these as well..

Right now Planetary Annihilation has me hooked...but I may need to step away and try something fresh and different. Not too often you hear about a strategy game getting expansions and still officially supported after 4 years that isn't a Blizzard title or a Civ title. I've always wanted to buy the game...but up until now it was a $150+ investment for the original + expansions direct from the developer. I figured $50 was a good price point for something that is so capable and that is so well regarded in the 4X fanbase.

I'm hoping to have some time this weekend to get my game on. I've been enjoying PA's Galactic War...and they just released an update tonight...I haven't seen any of the notes yet...but I'm sure it's an improvement. I've been really really really enjoying this game!

I tried Distant Worlds: Universe last night...and all I can say is...WOW. It's super cool More interactive simulation than game...it's sooooo interesting all the aspects that can be controlled, automated or anything in between. The graphics aren't amazing, the UI leaves a little to be desired but is plenty usable. The most recent patch resolves many of the text complaints I read about and never experienced. The game has so much going on, and is so interesting. It's like being a part of something big in an unraveling story that seems to only get better as it's told. Planning to have a solid birthday session tonight...well hoping to lol! Still at work, gotta move and paint yet and then get into work early tomorrow.

I do gotta say, I wasn't sure what I'd think of this game...but I think I'm gonna like it! So far it's got me uber interested to the point I keep thinking about it throughout the day. Reading about how to play it...many recommend going all manual with reminders....which I'm going to do!

Except when they sold out.... and Impulse... and Steam.....And never mind opinions on Steam or otherwise, they are technically DRM, no matter how snyone feel about their usefulness

I used to feel that way about them as well, and GalCiv definitely tempted me to hook them up again, but just couldn't do it...

Every rare once in a while my internet goes down and I can't play most of my games on Steam because I didn't go to offline mode first but a few of them launched anyway. Mostly older games from the early to mid 2000's. I have been told this is because the publisher chooses which games will require Steam DRM. Maybe Stardock won't require Steam's DRM to run.

I know CD Project RED doesn't use DRM. I deleted The Witcher already and I bought The Witcher 2 from GOG or I would test them to see if they launch without a net connection to Steam.

Both DVD versions of course launch without DRM or Steam, and of course, GOG now has them both as well. But I digress, this is a Strategy thread.

I was talking about possibly Gal Civ 3 could run without Steam DRM since the issue was brought up. That's a strategy game. I should have been more clear, I was talking about whether the Witcher 1 and 2 bought from Steam would run without Steam DRM.

Something like Dawn of War II, maybe XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Might & Magic Heroes 6... I played all of these (except for XCOM, only demo, think I'm gonna purchase it this week with South Park: The Stick of Truth). Getting pretty tired waiting for Civilization: Beyond Earth already...

this was back in 2008 when PC Gaming was in a down cycle (console ports, no exclusives, licensed copy protection).

people had more problems with Securom than pirates so Stardock took action. nothing to do with Steam.

Which puts us right in the discussion of whether Steam and Impulse are Stupid DRM or not, and whether or not requiring Steam to play a single player game falls under forcing a gamer to connect to the internet to play a single player game. That's opinion

as you can see from 64k's quoute it depends all to the publisher how will be handled steam drm.
