Hello all,

I recently bought a what I believe is called a ''slim'' desktop. It is older hardware and nothing too special but it does what I need it to do without any issues. Only thing is it is currently using on-board graphics specifically an Intel 865G chip. It doesn't support Windows Aero and occasionally reduces the quality of my Netflix streaming.

I just opened it up and was looking at how the graphics installation would go. There is a picture below of what I saw. There is 5 1/2 inches clearance from the top of the PCI slot to the PSU, and there is almost 8 inches of length in the other direction. I doubt I need anything that big but I checked anyways.

Simply, what is the cheapest option I have for a PCI Graphics Card (used of course) that will support Aero and work a little better than what I have?

I was hoping I could stick to around 10-15$ used. Its definitely not worth 50$ for me to get Aero working.

I think a Geforce GT520/GT610 or GT430 PCI would be your best bet.

What are the general price range of those?

for a pci card, they are all about the same, starting around 50 bucks...it doesn't have a huge market so the prices don't really change much at all

*edit*

troll ebay for pci 8400gs, 9400gs, gt430, gt610, even keep an eye out for ati/amd pci cards of the hd2400, hd3430 as they made a few pci cards as well...ebay might be your only bet to get one at a deal

Wow! I had no idea they were so expensive. I figured for what I wanted I could get a cheap old card but I guess it is kind of like how the older ram became more expensive than the newer. I will check ebay out. Thanks!

Would it need to be low profile based on my measurements?

shouldn't need to be low profile, most of the cards for pci are going to be fairly simple design and should fit no issues

well, I suppose a Geforce 6200 could do the trick for Aero but I don't know how would it fare with HD video.

New PCI video card is gonna cost you some bucks, because they aren't made in quantity any more. If you want to spend $20 or less, you'll likely need to find a used one. Try Craigslist or eBay. Lots of times I see PCI video cards sitting on the shelf at Goodwill for $3.

then it should be fine.

Anything from Geforce 6 series and up or Radeon X1000 series and up will work with Aero.

Is there anything you can find that puts them in a list? I can't seem to find anything like that.

6200gt maybe a 6600gt...those are the nvidia ones...

x1300 (pro,xt) and maybe some x1550/x1600 (also pro and xt verisons) should be able the only things that would have been made as a pci card.

you may even get by with previous gen cards but i wouldn't count on it.

pretty much any card you put in there is gonna be a waste of time
also anything older then a geforce 8 or AMD 4xxx isn't gonna have hardware accleration for video I would't waste time on that whole machine isn't even worth the 50.00 you would spend on a gpu
you aren't gonna get HD video on that machine regardless of what gpu you shove in there by the looks of its a late 2004/early 2005 ibm think center probably a northwood p4
its CPU/memory bound

I think its a Thinkcentre or something. Haven't seen a blue Dell motherboard.

He doesn't need video acceleration:
I'm not running HD video. Just 480p.
