Hi my mates laptop a Toshiba Satellite L500-1DT won't boot into windows and I was going to reset it back to factory settings, when I set the laptop to boot from hard drive in the bios nothing happens and when windows tried to repair it I got the message ( Media test failure) but when I tried to put a fresh install of windows using my disc I got to the part where you wipe it and it showed three partitions one was SYSTEM and the other was Windows would the pre installed windows be in one of them if so how do I get to it, help, I think my mate had a muck about with it but he is not saying.

Sounds like one of two problems: Either A: Windows installed faulty. Which is..odd.

B: The hard drive could have a bad sector meaning you can see that windows is installed but it is having a hell of a time trying to read it, and failing.

Here is the info, for those who don't like clicking unknown links:

(The first one may not work for all models but worth a try).

On start up (before Windows loads) press F8 and choose the option “Repair your Computer”

Or

1) Hold down the power button until it shuts down.

2) Press and hold the zero key and tap the power button once.

3) When you hear beeping release the zero key.

4) Click Yes to continue system recovery.

5) Click 'Recovery of Factory Default Software', click Next.

6) Click 'Recover to out-of-box state', click Next.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

If the HDD is trashed the repair might not work, as satindemon4u stated before.
