I am putting together a gaming PC for a friend who only plays World of Warcraft. She does not play anything else, so please make your recommendations based on this information.

Based on the current build assembly, I have ~$300-375 to work with, so I gravitated towards the GTX770 and the R9 290 (Yea the price swing down there infrequently). Upon reviewing W1z's reviews (which are my gold standard), it actually looks like nVidia products actually generally outperform their nearby or sometimes better AMD/ATI cousins in World of Warcraft.

Thus, while I know in general benchmarks and all other games, the R9 290 is the better option in the price window, but if I'm looking at a machine for JUST World of Warcraft, should I just choose a very nice 770?

TIA everyone!!

(In advance, the reason I'm asking here is for possibly more real life experiences of the two specific models, or brands in general, especially since I do not know what kind of benchmark run W1z executes to achieve his values, or if it was patch dependent or something)

Having played WoW for many years across Multiple systems. I will say this Nvidia do outperform AMD in Wow by a fair margin. Just make sure you go with Intel CPU. Blizzard games seems to be more CPU dependant.

Yea, I knew Intel CPU was a necessity for WoW, but it has been awhile since I played WoW, so wasn't sure of the GPU relationship.

My current plan outline has a 4690K with Dave's well recommended Fata1ity Z97X (Combo is like $325 @ Microcenter out the door).

+1 except I'm not sure that the AMD/nVidia argument should be a deciding factor. I never encountered issues with WoW when I played it with my AMD (even ATi in vanilla) GPUs granted things could have changed, it's been several years since I've played WoW.

I definitely think an Intel CPU is in order, an i5 would probably be the best fit unless you already have a motherboard and CPU for it already.

I never encountered issues myself with AMD gfx cards (still using now) . But for the same money an Nvidia card will perform better in WoW.

The whole point of my thread is that it is a deciding factor. I'm not referring to issues, I'm referring to $$$ : performance in WoW:MoP (and beyond theoretically)

Based on this statement alone, I would suggest the GTX 750 Ti as it has a very good price : performance ratio for 1080p gaming, and does not break the bank. I know you suggested a larger budget, but based on this statement, if the main use of the GPU will be for WoW, then it is not worth getting anything too much more powerful. Just my two cents. If you must get something more expensive, then GTX 760.

I don't think WoW is GPU hungry. I'm used to play with old Radeon X1950Pro and then Radeon 4670 1GB and it seems fine in 25 man raid.

A GTX 760 will be more than enough at 1080p. Pair it with a non-K version of the 4thGen i5 and at least 8GB of memory, and you'll have a decent gaming rig. A tad over the top for WoW:MoP in my opinion but hey, a rig is a rig.

Wow isn't very demanding a 750TI would be enough

I appreciate everyone's attempted assistance. The question was nVidia vs AMD, but I believe only one person decided to answer that question, and I sincerely say thank you for providing that answer. The final decision was to go with a MSI Gaming N770 TF GTX770. Best wishes everyone.
