Hi

Welcome to TPU

I need your help a lot! Same problem with Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2G DIRT 3 EDITION #11188-05 (could be?) Trying to flash a 6970 Rom : /

I've got no video

I found this datasheet
http://datasheet.eeworld.com.cn/pdf/PMC/152598_PM25LV010.pdf

I have to wire pins 1 and 8 right?
Answer: Only if the vga card is not recognised by atiflash at a DOS Prompt

Question: Is card still recognised by atiflash at DOS prompt? [If so follow instructions without attaching wire]

Edit:
Question: Assume instructions where followed from Here ?
Note:
these instructions are for Reference Design ONLY Update: 2
Example:
Reference Design Radeon-HD6950-PCB.jpg

Note: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2G DIRT 3 EDITION #11188-05 is NON-Reference design PCB
Example:
Sapphire-HD6950-Dirt3-Edition.jpg
Will need to reflash the vga card with Original or backup of Original vbios image [Note: should have edited a copy of vbios image with RBE and selected shader unlock saved image and flashed at DOS prompt for this model *If shader paths have not been laser cut they should open*]

**If able to access windows delete AMD/ATI drivers before flashing at DOS Prompt**

Follow Instructions Here

I managed to flash a 5870 with a 4890 bios and it's not showing up under any flashing utility in windows or DOS. Can anyone tell me how I go about finding the chip I need to solder a wire to pins 1 and 8? No clue how to find that chip, fan is already off. Thanks in advance.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

No clue how to find that chip,

Upload High Res Pics of the PCB [make sure they pick out the [chip serial numbers] most likley looking for PMLV010, from the HD 5870 pcb's looks like there are only three 8pin chips to choose from [cannot identify from the pics on the www as they are all low quality]

Note: If doing this without high res camara, use magnifying glass and bright light [pin 1 has a dot next to it]

Tip: google, chip number and get datasheet

I'll get my friend who's a photographer to take some pictures, I don't see any chip with a white "PMLV010" next to it, specifically the eight pin chips. Am I looking for a white label next to the chip, or the label on the chip itself?

A quick google search shows the sapphire board looks to be identical:

Good; need high res pic of the *front of the PCB [*side with the GPU on]

label on the chip itself?
[Not a lable on it or next to it] on the surface of the 8pin chip is enscribed/printed with its datasheet reference number [dot next to pin 1 with arrow pointing at it]

correct pcb just wrong side [that is a pic of the back of the PCB]

Found this pin! Is it safe to flash this card without the cooler attached for flashing purposes only (booting into dos from a usb drive, not even loading into windows)?

Any tips for soldering something this small? I've only done larger circuit boards.

NO; [** Important: must reattach heatsink]

sorry no tips to share on soldering; [strip wire from old IDE 80pin cable and loop through the gap between the chip leg and pcb twist it so that it forms good contact; ensure it is isolated from other components/pcb trace]

I heard you can use just thermal paste on 5870 heat sinks applied a bit thick, think it would be okay to paste it until i can order some thermal tape (probably 3M)?

the IDE ribbon idea sounds good; will probably try that.

Protip: If you just have to attach a cable to an IC pin, solder to the top of the IC's pin, not to where it makes contact with the PCB. Easier to reach, easier to remove.

Sorry for the dusty card. (Disclaimer: The pic is just to illustrate what I said. It is neither the IC required to solder in this thread, nor the correct pin)

Sounds like a rush job;
advice, slow down
*get all the components needed in advance*
use MX4 or equivelant for the GPU

Actually a very bad tip... If the soldering gun is way to hot and powerful and plate grounding way to good, it might fry the IC.

The only normal way is to solder on indirect points. Caps and resistor points on the PCB. Unless you have a preheating oven to put it underneath.

If that is the case, you will rip up the solder pad from the PCB when soldering. The IC can probably take the heat for longer.

Edit: wait, I'm not saying you solder the IC's own legs like that. I'm saying you _attach_ a _separate_ cable to an IC like this.

Yeah, I said that only because we are dealing with amateur on PCB rework... he might do something wrong, not you :D. GPU's are very boneskinned for soldering due to copper layers, so yeah...

Myself I am just soldering them off using hot air gun, and putting on etched PCB... and flashing using RaspberryPI SPI bus...

Here is a good guide.

I am still wondering if the PCI VGA isn't an easier option...

Unless I have missed the *point/issue in illuminaughty post; how will this help?

[Note: vbios is not recognied at the DOS prompt by atiflash; due to a HD 4890 vbios image being flashed to the vga card which has changed the device ID along with a few other parameters]

W1zzard could confirm, but I suspect the devid fields in hex are same for any bioses... he flashed ati to ati bios, it shouldn't be a problem. Atflash must see this card. Personally I had only such problems only if the flash is burned, not cross flashed. Atiflash with max hardcore :D switches should flash any kind of stuff into the eeprom.

I use an old pci card when working on this card. Nothing recognizes the card, even a blind flash did't work. Both

hello evrybody
i have a HD7850
and im having the same issue i just started with chrasing in games and flashed the bios (and just so stupid i was i forgot to make a bios backup) i flashed to a non reference card and mine is a reference card.
after some use it died and didten want to go back, my motherboard just says there is a problem/no video card.
the method i am gonna try to re flash is to solder a wire on to pin 1 and 8 on the bios chip but im not shure on witch chip is the bios chip if its the same as the 7870 (placed the same place) because i saw this method on youtube "
" but i want to be 100% that im doin it on the right chip so i dont kill other chips.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

but i want to be 100% that im doin it on the right chip so i dont kill other chips.

Manufactures Make?
Model Number?
SKU#?
or

High Res Picture of the vga cards PCB

Note: If possible, upload high definition pictures of the XFX 7850's PCB front and back
[select: TPU web site select: MORE select: FREE IMAGE HOSTING]

Note: DO NOT post serial number

Should look for Pm25LV010 or Pm25L XXXX on the surface of the 8pin chip is inscribed/printed with its datasheet reference number [may require magnifying glass and bright light]

You should be REMOVED from the internet, and there is a good reason why they are all labeled as use at your own risk. Seriously this is the most unhelpful post on a tech enthusiast hardware site I think I have ever seen, we are all supposed to be knowledgeable adults here who assume the risks taken with what we do, otherwise go buy a console or prebuilt computer and never worry about what the inside looks like.

You have to force the flash or night have to figure out where to jumper and erase the EPROM before performing the flash.

- Blind flash with ATIFlash. Booted into DOS with the 6850 in the machine only (slot 0), removed 6850 and replaced with 5870 while PC was on an at the dos command line. Ran ATIFlash command. No change, card is still not recognized. I'm certain the command was typed correctly.

Never pull a working card from PCIe slot!!! More than likely this is what will have or may have actually bricked the card.

- I took the cooler off my card, found the BIOS chip and shorted VCC and WP# (pins 3 and 8 according to the datasheet). ATIFlash still does not recognize the card. I'm an electrical engineer and I am confident that the soldering was done correctly.

I have force flashed all sorts of BIOS's onto cards and never had one actually brick from it, I have had to write batch files in another PC to run the flash for me and it has always recovered the card.

Placing it back into the primary slot so it would show as "0" run this from ATIflash. and replace the [index] portion with the 0 or adapter namespace, and the 4870.bin with your BIOS filename.

atiflash -f -newbios -p [index] 4870.bin

I should be removed from the internet?? Clever.......:slap:

I was merely commenting on the RIDICULOUS quantity of "misflashed" GPU threads on the internet, I was neither being all too serious, or hopeful that IF they WERE removed people would stop screwing around with they're hardware... I'll be certain to Clear anymore of MY posts with "Steevo" the posting police before I act ridiculous, and speak My mind again, and wish a NEW member good luck and support.

all apologies to Steevo...

Wop Wop! Finally got it working. I had to resolder the wires on the pins. Flashed it immediately! Much thanks guys. :lovetpu:

 I was gonna say..It sees the card..
I'm a compulsive GPU-BIOS flasher, too.
