Just wanted to say thanks to @manofthem for the giveaway which I won. I've been out of town for a few days with no internet, and the thread closed when I got home!

In order to enter, you must tell me which mathematical equation is your favourite, and why funny entries are most welcome!

Up for grabs, we have...

Goat Simulator
Shadowrun Returns Delux Edition
Deadlight
PAYDAY 2

One winner for the lot.

Rules as follows:

Must have been a member since May 2014
Must have at least 25 thanks
Entries will be closed when I feel like it!

I already love this competition :toast:

I might be being pedantic, but when you say equation, are you referring to the official mathematical term which requires the need for the expression to equal a number, for example "x + y = 3". Because I know some Physics- and Maths-based formulae that can be made pretty funny if not.

For the sake of ease of access, we'll go for the loosest term of equation anyone can think of, purely for the funny side of things. So eat your heart out.

My favorite equation.... area of a circle

A = πr2

Why? Working with pipe flow and tank volumes are essential to being a turd herder (wastewater operator/engineer). It's like a second language for me ;)

Nice, I don't have any of those games.

My favorite is Amdahl's Law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl's_law

I don't actually work out the specific gains or anything, it's used more as a concept while programming. When to make specific optimizations vs code complexity, etc.

I've also been able to cite it in a meeting to make me look all smart ;)

I have to say the Schrödinger Equation is my favorite, the time-independent version gave me nightmares even after university, however, the time-dependent version is so elegant and pretty easy to work with.

I have been really wanting to play goal simulator. Thus I am entering.

My favorite equation is difficult, because I have never thought of them that way. If I had to choose it would be:

Heres the picture.

My favourite...

EXP(i*Pi)=-1

I like this one because combining these 3 numbers including an imaginary number can have such a simple result, plus it's not too difficult to prove. Learnt it doing my maths degree.

'Coon is still a bum for winning my game :p

My favorite mathematical reference is still Quad Erat Demonstrandum. Always enjoyed the geometric theorems and proofs. But, my fav equation, is probably something from many years ago, when I first learned electrical theory: V=IR (Ohm's law). It's just so simple, easy to remember, can be turned around any way to determine what you don't know so easily.... Plus, electronics was something that my Dad and I had in common. I remember coming home from the Navy, discussing circuit boards and going over the thermo stuff I was learning with him.. good memories :)

Thanks for the giveaway!!

bum :p

You say it's your favorite, yet it's not in your signature like it is in mine. :p
No doubt, you like it more than I do. I did say "if I had to choose" because I still have some remnant distaste for math from when I was in public education.

This is known as one of the minimum space formulae. Or also known as the reason why bubbles exist. Isn't it so beautiful. :peace:

First day at university we learnt why bubbles are the shape they are, they take the shape which will have the most volume for the minimum surface area

Pretty basic, but I haven't thought of it too much, but one that does pop up is

e=mc^2

Nice, Personally i like L`Hôpital's rule, no real reason for it.

Makes Calculus easier to a degree depending on when and how you use it.

a1 / b1 = a2 / b2

I use it all of the time for scaling one value to another like resizing pictures or scaling recipe ingredients. It's really the only equation I use on a regular basis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthogonality

I enjoy reading through this and working out (slowly) the applications it has in my line of work and how we have used the "useless" math from school.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclidean_space

The 3D inertial controllers I use (with an extra gyro/accelerometer sensor to figure the steering angle and linear acceleration of the steering rate) correlates current trajectory with linear rate of change using Kalman filtering for current and to predict future position of the vehicle at 50Hz and make corrections to stay on line with a differentially corrected GPS source giving us our current position at 5 or 10Hz to correct for gyroscopic and accelerometer drift and inconsistencies in hydraulic response. The lines we calculate are accurate to 8 decimal points of GPS and use Euclidean/Orthogonal math to derive a true line for heading and to prevent geodesic error from becoming an issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodesics_on_an_ellipsoid as noted here.

I would love to have the time to study this all in more depth.
