I won't enter (being as those games would be thrown out by my mom) but I'll give an equation that still messes with me. (I'm only in 9th grade, I don't know that much math. :p)
What's blown my mind is the equation that proves 0.9 repeating equals 1.
It goes
X=0.99999...
Times 10
10x=9.99999...
Minus an x
9x=9
Divided by nine
X=1

Blew my mind when I learned it a year or two back.

EDIT: Ah, I see rcoons post. I guess if I win I'll regift them?

Nice, I remember teaching that to a group of year 9s when training to become a maths teacher (although I didn't end up doing this as a profession), I also thought it was impressive

You're making a logical error at the bolded part because at the 9 infinity, when you subtract after you multiply by 10, they are no longer equal because you've moved the decimal point. There will always be a .9 difference from that point on until you divide by 10 to make them equal again. But you don't divide by 10, you divide by 9. In effect, you're rounding 9 infinity to 1 and not documenting that you've rounded.

There was another thread, I think on General Nonsense, where we debated 9 infinity. But bluntly, the decimal numbering system is terrible at infinities without symbolism (line over the 9) declaring that the value exists outside of the decimal system (like pi and imaginary).

Either card will work just fine with the 770 obviously being a bit faster. The only big limitation with the Phenom II's is when you're using multiple GPU's and the occasional heavy CPU dependent game. Only thing you need to make sure of, is if your current power supply can handle the new card. Other than that, you're good to go. :)

hehe :)

have to say good old E=Mc2 so powerful yet so tiny :)

By doing the same operation to both sides the equation remains valid.

By doing the same operation to both sides the equation remains valid.

It can also be proved in the following way:

1/9 = 0.1111. . .

9 x 1/9 = 9 x 0.1111. . .

1 = 0.9999. . .

I like to give students invalid proof like this:

a = b
a squared = ab
a squared - b squared = ab-b squared
(a-b)(a+b) = b(a-b)
a+b = b
b+b = b
2b = b
2 = 1

They stir quite the controversy until someone figures out the flaw.

Being an artist I HATE math. I don't understand it. I can't even figure out the damn tip after dinner. So my favorite equation is the one I can figure out in my head and not have to use my fingers.

Seriously I can't even remember the times table. Its like my brain shuts off when I see numbers. You guys posting these formula's makes it worse. lol All joking aside I have a real issue with it. I have credits in Aerospace engineering and it wasn't until my third year my instructor was all like "WTF! did I just see you count off on your fingers?!" Then I told him I have a 5th grade understanding of math at best. No joke when I was tested I had an IQ of 146 in high school yet MATH IS WITCHCRAFT! It has to be visual for me to do anything. I have to see it.

Now if you wanna talk about mixing color or guns......I GOT THAT!

I'm entering for anything I can win.

Pretty much. I had friends in school that went on to work for Boeing and McDonnell Douglas. Yet I sit at home and paint pretty pictures.

What's a tip?

In most of america, waiters' and waitresses' employers pay them such a crap and below average wage, the american population is essentially forced to subsidise this lack of pay by being coerced into leaving a 20% tip as a "recommended minimum". In blunt, if you don't leave a tip when you eat out in america, you're considered a terrible person. I'm amazed their employers haven't been moaned at.

I have heard people say it is a good thing because they can make extra money from it. I personally would rather them pay proper wages and raise the price of food accordingly.

and amazingly this binomial option pricing model gives similar result

The BOPM is more fun to construct however.

These are my "favorite" because I had to memorize these equations in grad school for a few exams. I am just glad I didn't ever need to write the proof for the first one.

It is argued that these equations are the cornerstone of the large financial collapse in 2008.

The book I learned them from was pretty interesting, Hull's Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives

edit:

Forgot to say why funny entries are most welcome. Because the above two equations are boring as shit ... clearly something funny would be more welcome LOL

I'm not entering. Thanks for the giveaway though.

1/x as x goes to infinity the limit is 0

Most people fear calculus but I liked it. It made maths easier. Lots of short cuts over using algebra.

So, the other day, I was at a party with cos(x), tan(x), sqrt(x), e^(x).

All the cool functions, basically.

After a while, we noticed that e^(x) was in the corner on his own. Obviously, we didn't want him to feel left out, so I went over and asked him, "Hey e^(x), what's up?".

"Well", he said, "I tried to integrate, but nothing happened!"

So, for making this punchline possible, I'd like to nominate the following equation:

Not entering....I'm with MM in that math is the absolute most confusing thing in the world (although I CAN work stuff out when forced to). I mean, I think I would rather milk goats than do math. I do appreciate it's role in our beloved PC hobby though!

Thanks @RCoon for such an innovative giveaway!

Not entering, just wanted to say thanks and tell you a little story about my math teacher from 12th grade. He was teaching us something about calculating areas for irregular shapes (rough translation, also not very good at math myself) and one of my colleagues asked "why do we need to learn this, how will this help us in real life?" , the teacher then brilliantly answered "well you see, after you graduate and get a job, you'll know how to calculate the irregular area of the pavement that you're going to be sweeping as a street cleaner" . Everyone was laughing, hope the translation didn't take away from the joke :D
