pulled it straight up is it ok? it went back in fine and turns on and runs fine would i know by now if it was damaged?

hey, yeah id say it wouldnt work if it was really broken but keep an eye on the temps at full load, see if its much hotter, but if it dies one day soon at least ya know why

This has happened to me 3 times in the past. As long as you didn't twist the heatsink and bend any pins on the CPU you should be fine. Check the pins on the underside of the CPU, other than that it's probable your CPU is fine.

So when removing a heatsink that seems almost like glued to the CPU, is it best to just keep pulling straight up, or twist it left and right a bit, not much until it looseness up?

iv done that a few times use less/better thermal paste next time
never twist if you think it might be stuck thats how you break pins

I have had this happen twice with AS5. as long as you didn't fold any pins over or snap any pins off. your fine.

Or just heat it up a little prior to pulling (hair dryer, Prime95, etc).

It happens dude, don't worry to much about it just be a bit more careful. I think we have all done that at least one time or another, its only serious if you pulled the pins at an angle or broke a pin off but you would notice pretty fast if that happened when trying to seat it.

But isnt it the locking pin should protect the CPU from "spinning" or even moving even the heatsink is somewhat "stuck" in the CPU?

Better safe than sorry, check the alignment of the pins with a credit/debit card of some sort. razer blades also work but be careful not to scratch anything with it unless its yourself

I did this once and spent 2 hours cussing and slowly moving pins back into alignment.

this is why AMD needs a retention method like intel that comes down over the cpu and prevents it from moving in either direction why they insist on using the same old crappy ZIF type sockets is beyond me

I did this once with an AM2 setup and it broke pins... many many pins.. I now twist side to side slightly before removing a CPU to break free some of the TIM.

Happened to me as well not too long ago. Wow how I panicked when it happened but after seeing all the pins were on it I was a bit relieved. I even played a game before removing it so that the paste would be heated up and easier to remove but it still happened. I even had trouble removing the CPU from the heatsink after I pulled it out. But in was all good in the end.

I did this the first time I was cleaning my desktop. I pulled the heatsink up and here came the CPU clinging for dear life to it. I used nail polish remover and got a screwdriver, prying them both apart. The CPU then flew up about a foot or two and landed into the bathroom sink. A few pins were bent but it was an easy fix. CPU worked great and still does in the hands of a friend of mine.

Is it just me, or does this only happen to AMD CPUs? I have never had an Intel pop out with the heat sink but has happened to me multiple times (with no adverse effects) with AMD.

intel has a metal lid that goes over the CPU and socket that only exposes the heat surface so you are covered by this hinge.

...There is a bracket holding the Intel chip in place is why that does not happen.

Trust the socket temp, the Core temps alot of times are not very accurate on CPU's.
