Hi guys,

I'm in desperate need of help. As you can imagine, something really stupid is at the origin of my problem : I didn't actually know that my HD5850 is a non-reference (with blue PCB) ... This card : HIS H585FN1GD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161330

Anyway, I couldn't find any stock bios for this exact GC, and couldn't find any other compatible bios (for example http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/sapphire-hd5850-bios.151179/#post-2379084 this one doesn't work) . So I'm asking you guys, if you have any clue, or even a BIOS in particular which should be compatible.
I'm quite desperate because I know the 5xxx generation are getting quite old, and the chances to find someone who could send me the stock bios of this card are extremely thin...

Thanks in advance !

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I have tried all of these, but the awkward part is that the most recent bios is supposedly the correct one for the "HIS HD 5850 icooler V" which seems to be the same reference as my GC (same cooler, same clock), but doesn't work.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

most recent bios is supposedly the correct one for the "HIS HD 5850 icooler V" which seems to be the same reference as my GC (same cooler, same clock), but doesn't work.

How was the vga card flashed?
atiflash [drivers uninstalled before flash]
atiwinflash

any error codes or just blank screen?

Note: being non-reference pcb layout, vbios image will need to be a copy of or original

How to make an image of current vbios [for persons that would like to help, but do not know how they can]
make sure model is this: HIS H585FN1GD
download and run GPU-Z here
Example
Extract vga bios.jpg
Select: bios chip icon
Select: save to file [VbiosName.rom]
Select: VbiosName.rom [file that was created]
press right mouse button
Select: send to compressed zip folder

Reply to post and "upload a file" to attach it

Hi

Anyway, I still don't understand how this vbios (http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/74784/his-hd5850-1024-100324.html) couldn't work with my GPU...
Possible that the voltage regulator is different; memory or timmings and or other

Edit : I tried other vbios with atiflash afterwards
error code at the DOS prompt?

**If you are able to access windows with a spare vga card or onboard vga; Uninstall any AMD drivers for the vga card before the flash process**
Create a bootable flash drive

go here http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/browse.php?c=21

Download - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 & Windows 98 System Files

click Primary Download unzip the files to a folder on your HDD; make sure your USB Memory stick is attached to your PC; open HP USB Disk

Storage Format Tool v2.1.8 ; select Creat a DOS startup disk/ select: using DOS system files located at: (these are the files you have just downloaded): browse to the files in win98boot; then start the process.

Download latest version of ATIFlash
here - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...sh%203.99.html

copy atiflash and [VbiosName].rom to the usb flash drives root directory

Set the motherboard bios to boot from usb *press F8 during boot; select from boot menu if option is avalable; this should boot to a win98 dos prompt

Type at the dos prompt - dir to veiw the content of the flash drive

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -i 0 [see if adapter is at this address and is recognised]

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -unlockrom 0 to unlock the gpu in adapter 0 [Note: 0 is the primary card PCIe slot one & 1 is the secondary PCIe slot two][*may be required]

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -f -p 0 [VBiosName].rom [Note: 0 is the primary card PCIe slot one & 1 is the secondary PCIe slot two] [Note: when booting from onboard vga / igp also = primary position 0]

I have a crossfire of 5850's (the first one is a reference GPU from 3d club), that's why I can access the bios and even access windows (only when I remove the faulty GPU).

I haven't actually uninstalled the AMD driver before, so I'm going to try this and flash the GPU with the newest version of atiflash (4.17).

And no, I don't get any error code at the DOS prompt (I use this command atiflash -ai, atiflash -unlockrom 1 and atiflash -f -p 1 bios.rom).

Thanks for the support and all :)

@BraveSoul : The vbios of the sapphire GPU (which is also a non-reference model) doesn't allow software control of voltage. So there's no difference with the stock vbios. For the fan speed there's a huge difference : it seems to be adjusted like the reference HD 5850 fan now (21-30% fan speed), which is quite a progress in comparison to the stock vbios which constantly held the fan speed >50% (that was actually my main reason to flash the bios of my GPU).

Edit : Btw at which point/temperature should I worry for my HD 5850 ? 60°C ?

Anything *over 80c under load for the gpu [*would need better cooling "H2o or Other" to bring temps under control]
Use gpu-z to keep an eye on the VRM temps though keep them between 80~85 Max [VRM's heat up very quickly when using sinthetic benchmarks, (best to bench using games)]

Note: for vga card; create higher fan curve or adjust the fan manually

With the fan speed at 25% I'm getting 67°C under game conditions. Take into account the general temperature of 31°C (well it's summer after all). I put the fan speed at 35% and everything is quite cool (<60°C) and silent.
