How to lock my external hard drive with password?

Bitlocker to go would be perfect if your running windows 7 or 8. Look in the control panel for Bitlocker and have your ext plugged in.

The problem you have is that whatever you do, whether it is using bitlocker or a 3rd party (some are free) app to set a password or limit access through user "permissions" as soon as you plug the hard drive into another PC you have lost it. Whilst I am no expert I would guess that may be the same for any software based solution.

Bitlocker should cause any system to prompt for the password.

Encrypt the drive. Bitlocker is Windows built-in way to encrypt the drive (assuming you have a version of Windows that supports it).
