RAM Speed

Hey folks,

I have a question.... err rather I am looking for a community consensus.

About a year ago now.... maybe later.... I bought my VLP cruical set of RAM..... for about $130.....

Then the RAM prices spiked up really high to bring the kit to $180 and now it sits at $160 so it normalized a bit...

I see some G. Skill Snipers for $160 that is 2400 Mhz instead of 1600Mhz.... is it worth?

If in to benchmarks this will show "some"improvement and may give a little more headway for CPU oc
If using real world applications and games little to know improvement; [maybe; windows will feel a little crisper].

1600MHz is generally adequate. You *might* see some improvement with 1866MHz kits, but really there is not much point in going over that. If you can go from 1333 to 1866 for 30 bucks on a 16GB kit, I'd say you have quite a decent deal. (assuming same CAS)

I just have been seeing emerging articles lately about how the higher frequency RAM has improved minimum frame rates anywhere from 5-10FPS, sometimes more depending on the game, which will actually make games smoother.

Yeah it depends on the situation. Usually you want at least 1600MHz, although as I said 1866MHz seems to give better performance in some cases. Usually this does manifest itself as increased minimum frame rate.

Either way, if you aren't too worried about dropping a few tens of dollars on a new ram kit, there are pretty decent 1866 and 2133 ones floating around. Although take into consideration that DDR4 is only a few years out for the mainstream platforms, so if you are thinking about investing in an X99 or other DDR4 capable platform in the near future you might want to keep the cash.
