Hello, I'm confused about what happened to my graphics card

It suddenly crashed while I was playing game, and then it cannot boot to Windows. Encountered bluescreen which says something about atikmpag.sys error.

I can still boot to safe mode, and tried to uninstall the driver. Only then I can boot to Windows.

But I can't seem to get the driver installed correctly again. I've used driver sweeper, and CCleaner to kinda make sure nothing left in the registry.

Everytime I installed the driver and restart the computer, the bluescreen returns. Forcing me to uninstall it to make it working (able to boot to windows) again.

It's working if I put another graphics card (I have a spare HD5750) so I just assumed that my HD6870 died because of a hardware issue.

But really, what happened to my HD6870? Is there any chance to fix the problem?

Thanks

Try it in another pc if you can, if the issue persists, the card is broken.

I tried plugging it into another PC, it failed to boot. The bluescreen now pops out on the other PC but not when I change it back to its original GPU used in that PC

Something like that, and it says atikmpag.sys or something.

FreedomEclipse mentioned something about the GPU BIOS, could it be the problem? Or my card is totally done for?

If you havent modified the bios then what i mentioned previously isnt relevant.

Anyway it sounds like the card is just dead. I reminds me of the time one of my 4870s died because of an unstable PSU. WHat power supply do you have btw?

I have a Corsair CS650M as my PSU

And one more thing I just remembered, wonder if this is related.

I installed catalyst 14.4 several weeks before it happened to play Battlefield Hardline (the game told me to update my driver). Is there any chance that the driver somewhow caused the problem to the BIOS? Though I did nothing else but install and play.

Btw, sorry if I sound a bit insisting, but I'm not convinced enough that the card is actually dead ^_^;

If the card is dead, how come it's still working in safe mode? Isn't the monitor supposed to not be able to display at all if the GPU is dead?

There are different types of dead a gpu can be. I have a 8800gt that boots up fine, the drivers install fine but it shows artifacts and does not accelerate anything. AFAIK drivers don't screw up bioses, and since you have tested it in another pc and it was behaving in the same manner, it's safe to say the card just died.

Backup your stuff and try reinstalling Windows. About a month or two ago, an AMD update broke my Windows installation and I couldn't even get into safe mode. While your situation isn't as bad as mine was, I would still try it considering the machine will boot into safe mode. Just rule out Windows and OS in general. Start from the beginning.

You need that entire code for diagnostics

I solved the problem by changing my power source. HD6870 needs a combined 5V + 3.3V (25A + 25A) minimum of 150W. My 130W was not enough. I bought this power source: http://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/522 for 120€ aprox but there is another model (650W) for about 80€ (25A + 20A, 150W), I wanted not to take that risk for 5A... I hope this help, now I'm very happy playing with my HD6870 (and no more blue screeeeeennnns !!! :D )

The 6870 does not require 3.3v or 5v power sources. It sounds like to me that the PSU you got just doesn't have issues on the +12v rail where the last one did. Either way, glad to hear that you figured it out.
