Hi.

I'm quite new to the R9 series. I used to own 2x 6950 radeon hd cards back in the day...
Now I see that there has been the 7xxx series, the R7 and R9 series if I'm correct...

Their terminology has changed. It's now R9 260, 265, 270, 275... sometimes there's an "x" next to that number.
Could one of you give me a quick overview of what those numbers mean so I can understand what to look for when shopping.

I'm looking to get a new graphics card

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
Its kind of hard to explain but I can bracket them for you

Entry level
260
265

Mid level
270
275

Highend
280
280x

Enthusiast
290
290x
295x2

The "x" represents the same card as the none x edition only the x editions have more shader units.

It's a bit odd indeed, the numbers for most are actually rebrands of the 7XXX series.

It goes something like this in order of power (with labels for rebrands).

R9 295X2 (dual 290X)
R9 290X
R9 290

R9 280X (HD 7970Ghz)
R9 280 (HD 7950)

R9 270X(HD 7870 Ghz)
R9 270 (HD 7870 with lower core clocks and less overclocking potential)

R7 265 (HD 7850)
R7 260X (HD 7790)

After that you get into some new low end cards.

The X can mean multiple things, normally it's just a higher unlocked chip with more stream processors except in the 270-270x case which is just a higher binned chip essentially.
