So i cant for the life of me find out why my Graphics card randomly drops to 4 Fps for like 20sec then shoots back up to 60-70fps. its driving me crazy and I have researched every where and can not find a solution. Can any of you possibly help me out?

Thanks,
Ryan

Yep as other said. It's probably throttling because of heat.

That is the common cause, so try that first... But according to that screenshot the temperature is never exactly scalding. What have you done in ways of troubleshooting?

filling out your system specs would have been a great first step, second step would be a GPUZ screenshot while running one of the games in windowed mode - if the systems not overheating, its probably running out of Vram

I assume that's during gaming.

221MB seems way too low, unless it was a very casual game. In that screenshot/that game, it would seem to be temp throttling at play but i didnt want to rule out other possibilities (could be just a 512MB card for all we know)

Then it would throttle at less than 80 C. Isn't that a bit low for a GPU?

Why does the load on the memory controller increase when the clocks go down?

looking at that screenshot, it definitely overheated. main is that the core voltage dropped at the same time as 'perfcap' happened, all the clocks dropped (So memory load went up - more stressed while clocked lower)

Since it seems like a low Vram game, i'd have to suggest dusting out the laptop with compressed air, regreasing the GPU if possible, and running games with Vsync enabled to keep the FPS low (a non demanding game at 100+ FPS could trigger this)

... but below 80 C? The current temp is 76 C and at the end of the graph is a tick that puts it at throttling levels.

On the other hand, I had a CPU that died when it reached 40 C. Anything can happen.

i have a 2670QM with a 570m.... so i'm quite close to OP

how come my perfcap is always grey with the text 'util'? i have hit 97 or 98 degrees on the gpu without any throttling while the cpu was at 93 or 94 during that time

my guess is that the game being run isnt very demanding & the driver flips to idle speeds since that is the default power setting in nvcp (adaptive)

i am set to 'prefer maximum performance', then putting chrome.exe to adaptive so that it doesnt stay in 3d clocks with the gpu accelerated browser running

also, what's with all the running bluestacks processes, razer game booster, HTC, public wifi, alienware, roxio, blah blah GARBAGE?

75C could be a throttle temp, if its not THAT sensor doing the throttling. could be 80C a few centimeters over.

graph makes it hard to see what the temp was when it cut out

Is their a software I could use to take off the throttle? and My main game lately is Wildstar. The Razer Game Booster turns off all unneccassary backrounds that are running. But that was not taken during the game. It was taken during the Tech GPU Sensor test. It always drops down to the same thing.

Also, the Cooling fan underneath my laptop (Alienware M17 R3) Is only a crappy 20$ Walmart one. I also dont use 3d at ALL So I am not sure what settings to use in the Nvidia Application. I also do have Prefer max Performance on.

To me and based on all that has been said it does sound like it maybe a thermal throttle because otherwise you should not be getting FPS dips like that. As stated one of the first things to do is get a can of air and try to blow out your laptop of all dust because it will make a difference and since its an Alienware M17 it should have good open areas on the cooling side to get access to cleaning.

If you want to check whats going on exact, you can download MSI afterburner and see moment to moment what is going on being recorded in a graph (Temps, Core Clocks, Etc). That may give you the additional information you are needing and help you/us see exactly what is going on.

I just found out it is throttled. As soon as it hits 77% It throttles all.

HD movies do not stress, or even use the graphics card at all. thats CPU.

If I watch a video the gpu uses about 14% and the cpu also about 14% load, but yes it does not stress the card.

I've got an intel onboard 8MB IGP in one of my netbooks that can play 720p content just fine.

hardware decoding only really matters for DVD and BD directly, and it doesnt stress out modern GPU's in the slightest unless something is adding post processign effects (settings in the AMD CCC/nvidia CP)

I used to have a program that would put my GPU into idle mode, because nVIDIA's drivers are broken and run it at full speed as soon as you connect a second monitor. It would automatically switch back to max clocks as soon as GPU load got beyond a certain point, but I found that some of my games would have lag spikes while playing and it turned out to be that GPU usage was dropping below the threshold and switching the card back into idle mode; it would chug along for a little while, then once GPU load got heavy again it would ramp the clocks back up. Maybe there's something iffy with the drivers and it's switching the card into idle mode when it shouldn't.
