Windows 8.1 + UEFI

Hi Guys,

I should receive my Asus Maximus VII Hero, Samsung EVO 840 Basic, Seagate Barracuda together with a retail Windows 8.1 64Bit DVD this week.

After doing some general research on the new motherboard i discovered this thing called UEFI, and found out that you can install Windows on your SSD so that it runs faster than trough the old bios (legacy?)

I have read serveral guides on how to install Windows on your SSD trough UEFI, but also found out alot of people have to change some settings in the bios first for the SSD to actually boot the Windows disc in UEFI.

Now my quest is: Will i actually have to do anything on my bios first, or will this new motherboard have UEFI and everything else that is needed enabled by default?

Will i be able to just put the Windows disc in and boot the SSD disc in UEFI straight away?

The guides that i have been reading are making my head explode, as i am not familiar with SSD or UEFI, last time i installed Windows it was Windows 7 just normal on a HDD.

But still i am wanting to get as much performance out of my new system as possible.

NOTE: DO NOT plug in any other drives besides the SSD. Windows has a tendency to install boot flag crap on any other drives present. Install windows first, and then plug in the Seagate afterwards.

Thanks for the quick reply.
That guide looks pretty straight forward, although this is a guide for Windows 7.
Will is be the same for Windows 8?

I would assume so, all you have to do is go into the BIOS and ensure UEFI is enabled. From there, with the Win8 disk in the drive, spam whatever F key is your motherboard's "choose boot device" option, and select the UEFI one available from there. Then install 8 as necessary, choosing the custom installation, and setting up a blank fresh partition. Windows should do the rest automatically.

yes, also the "faster operation" you're referring to is at boot time, don't expect your SSD to suddenly get superpowers and transfer files at the speed of light

(well, technically it does...electrons and all that... but you get what I mean)

rcoon is right, just enable uefi per your motherboard and select the uefi boot disk/dvd when installing windows. 7 and 8 it works the same. once you're booting off the uefi drive it looks EXACTLY the same as without, so the only way to know is when you select that boot option. sometimes you can have the disk/drive in, go into your bios, and see all of the options. but other times you will need a live boot menu. in that case:

go into bios, enable uefi if not enabled
reboot, load boot menu, select uefi method for the dvd/drive
install.
...
profit.

also trwov is right of course, it's your bios speed not your pc speed. still i prefer uefi.

I tried to change something in the order of my booting devices in the hope it would fix it but now they are all gone.
Anyone knows what I should change to get them back?

Setting the mobo back to default did not work.

did you happen to change fast hardware boot too?

I think I got this boot manager once but then it went away when I pinpointed to the dfeault disk with Windows8 install.

Check if its set like by me

this part, make sure your main Disk with OS is set to no1

and here too - BBS priorities, mine wasnt set here properly and it failed,

similar to you just got new sys and then got curious if I have uefi boot enabled or not.. Also tweaked to much and it was what it was.
Btw uefi is already enabled by default.

Its the same, but still not working.
Although behind my DVD drive it says (fat) after uefi.
When I double click that boot drive the screen only flickers one time and its back to BIOS.

Is that a problem?

Hm Idk,

Did you make sure you have your main SSD @ no1 by BBS, my last pic?

Also bellow you see boot override, boot from OS SSD first to see if its gonna boot now.

It keeps getting to the black screen that says CDBOOT: couldn't find BOOTMGR, or it takes me to the blue windows screen with the 0x000009 error.

It could be as simple as the data cord from DVD drive to Motherboard being bad. Do you have another cable?

Problem solved! thanks TheHunter and everybody for their help.
I had missed something in the screenshots TheHunter made and changed the devices correctly in the BIOS.
Installed Windows 8.1 without a problem, although i forgot to unplug my HDD!

So to make sure all the files are on the SDD i will run a clean install again later this week.

PS: i also had a problem that my system did not boot in one go, when pressing the power button it started up, shut down after 1 second and stared up again to Windows.
I found out that the BCLK settings were not correct, so i changed 100.103 > 100.100 and set the frecuency of my ram to 1600mhz. everything worked fine after.

Ugh, i forgot that also brand new systems are not always a walk in the park. :fear:
