GTX 680 Still worthwhile?

Just traded my 7870 and some cash for a 680 2GB and am wondering how good it performs compared to my 7870 as I have never used Nvidia before :O I have noticed BF 4 performs really well on ultra @ 1080P but thats the only game i've really played since getting it. Any input is welcome

It sounds like he already purchased the card and the 680 was all that was available.

TPU shows about a 41% performance improvement from a HD 7870 to a GTX 680. As long as you didn't pay too much, I would say it's a good upgrade.

What he meant was the 680 is the same as a 770 because 770 is a re-branded 680.

The GTX 770 is the Kepler refresh of the GTX 680. It performs better. imo the GTX 680 is still a pretty solid card at 1080p. You can't play every game at max settings with decent frame rates if that is important to you but it does pretty well with most games.

I'll disagree with this. I owned a 680 for couple months before the 780 released, and I have a fairly large game library on steam and origin, and every game I was able to crank up max settings with AF and AA. Some games obviously like Crysis 3 wouldn't run at 60fps, but I didn't mind. But like BF3, game ran up near 70-80fps maxed out.

Its a perfectly fine card, I just hope you did not spend to much on it.

Its still one of the top tier cards for gamers right now.

Good deal. Enjoy the card. I know i enjoyed mine. 680/780 has been the best cards I have ever owned. The 680 being the first high end card I ever bought, from Nvidia.

I'm not sure what we are in disagreement on. We both said the same thing. Most games you can play on max settings with decent frame rates but not every one. Crysis 3 is an example. Watch Dogs would be another.

I normally view any card that can run ultra at the standard resolution of the year well to be a top tier card

You would be correct and I wouldn't say it's a matter of opinion, there is a performance gap measured by a guy with a pointy hat.

680 in pairs or three way is a good b4b.

And I wouldn't worry about the mem. The lowly 3 gb 780 TI handles nearly all that goes its way. The horsepower from multiple cores would make up.

consider this, there were only a handful of games that a single GTX 480 couldn't handle at 1080p. a 680 being much much faster than a single 480 = should be fine for a long time to come at least at 1080p.

at launch the 680 was 23% faster than the 7870 at 1920x1200 (must have been before w1z swapped in 1080p in benches)

comparing that to a more modern review it appears to have held that same lead or at least within a percent or 2

I must say i really like this GFX card. It handles all the games I play at max easily and it runs at a decent temp, here is my o/c

may up the memory a little bit more

What 680 is it? Id imagine you's have abit more to get out of the core. Somewhere around 1200-1250 could be possible and you would notice a bigger performance increase overclocking the core compared to memory.

worthwhile? Absolutely.
even one of them is still a monster.
Expect a minimal improvement with a step up to the 7 series GTX.
A few FPS at most.

It's more than a few, but yeah, 680 is still a great card. The power consumption and heat is the only downside, but if that's no matter for ya, then it's all good.

Yeah, that's a good trade. My 680 4GB boosts to the same clock and it did well enough that I didn't mind selling my 780.

I have a MSI GTX 680 PE with a lighting cooler, I've not found a game that I can't max out. The only reason I would upgrade anytime soon is to get something with more ram for my Nvidia surround 3x monitors. But for a single screen it's really nice. The only thing I would suggest is pulling the reference cooler off and reapplying thermal compound to push it as much as possible.
