I have an asus hd 7850 video card. it used to cause horizantal flickering when used with dvi to vga converter. I read somewhere that the flickering is caused by conflicting 2d and 3d clocks of the card. Temporary solution was to set 2d clock to 500mhz but it was annoying to set it every time I logged in to windows. (tweak tool can't save the settings)

I read that people fixed similar problems by flashing vbios so it looked like a good idea to try. I used this one http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/134508/asus-hd7850-1024-120716.html flashed it using atiflash and it works, it no longer flickers and the cards performance improved too but now hdmi doesn't work. (NO SIGNAL thing)

I'm planning the buy a new monitor with hdmi soon so If somebody could give the cards original vbios it would be great

what happens if I flash vbios of another brand?

Hi

Welcome to TPU

what happens if I flash vbios of another brand?

vga card with *same PCB layout: core/memory speed, memory type/size and outputs {DVI HDMI DP} etc: [*should be possible although stability may not be guaranteed]

Hi

it wouldn't brick the card right?

is possible; prep for the worst if flashing without seeing the PCB naked

thanks,

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/135401/powercolor-hd7850-1024-121031.html

missing one of the dvi outputs.

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/136514/sapphire-hd7850-1024-130124.html

looks really different but the outputs are the same. I think this one is the closest.

it wouldn't brick the card right?
The rule of thumb is, if your card is of a non reference design it's much more likely you will brick the card, if yours is reference, make sure your flash is with a reference cards bios (compare specs, if need be download VBE7 from this site, upload the Bios you are thinking about flashing and opening it in VBE7, that will show you most of the details for comparison with your own), there is a greater chance of compatibility but of course no guarantees, can you link your card from the Asus site for us?

I used the 4th one W1zzard uploaded and now everyting is back to normal, hdmi works fine and dvi to vga causes flicker once again. (with ubuntu I noticed that it doesn't flicker untill I install fglrx drivers)

do you have any idea why I get no flicker and no hdmi with this vbios? http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/134508/asus-hd7850-1024-120716.html . something about digital - analog signals?

edit: but with the original bios the image is more clear. the 120716 one couldn't detect my monitor right I guess.

I fixed the problem by buying an hdmi to vga cable. quality difference isn't really noticeable
