Along with their Platinum units, Seasonic also revamped their Gold-certified line-up, and the fresh X-1050 and X-1250 now get to add "XM2" to their model numbers. In this review, we will evaluate the X-1250 -- its promise is to deliver high efficiency and top performance at an honest price.

I wouldn't buy any Gold unit at this rate, especially at this watt range since I personally care about every watt of efficiency. Platinum is the way to go at this time and date. Earth matters, even if talking about small watts.

^+1. 80Plus rating is sometimes over-rated. People think that rating=power quality.
Yes, 80Plus gold and platinum PSUs need good components to get efficiency, but no one can promise you extremely stable and clean power. That's what tests are for.

My point exactly...I have this PSU's platinum bro and although I love it, my Cooler Master V1000 is a platinum psu that is sold as a gold unit and is just as solid.

Not touching in what way? Efficiency wise a unit that does Platinum will generally hold it's ground against a Gold rated unit. I'm not talking about performance or build quality here.

I don't think that 80 Plus equals to quality. You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

As for your V1000, it can't pull Platinum in the hot box. It can only do it at cold temps, that's why it's rated at Gold and not Platinum. The components in it are lower rated than the ones in the Platinum version of the same platform.

The difference in efficiency between a solid Gold and Platinum PSU are abysmal. A lot question whether it is actually needed and depending on the manufacturer it also does equate to build value/performance. The V1000 also misses the Platinum standard in the hot box by a small margin but clears the Gold margin by a land slide. As I've stated before there's plenty of Platinum PSUs in which this Seasonic will destroy.

Going by that logic, one can also get a Silver unit since the difference in efficiency between a Silver and a Gold unit is abysmal.

A lot question whether it is actually needed and depending on the manufacturer it also does equate to build value/performance.

A more efficient PSU means a cooler running PSU, a cooler system and a better Earth. There's no question needed to equate that. Higher efficiency is the way to go, period.

I know that as I mentioned it. The fact of this Seasonic "destroying" a Platinum PSU is pointless as the differences between high end units are marginal and there are many Platinum units (including this design's own) that outperform this one.

But then you say a gold unit is not worth the purchase?go figure.

For example Antec Earthwatts Platinum's are filled with crappy capacitors.. The 80+ rating doesn't automatically tell about the quality of the PSU:s components.

I'm not sure why you're mentioning that as nobody here says higher efficiency instantly equals to a higher quality build.

Well, if you judge a PSU "not so good if it's gold"? Who cares really if it's Gold or Platinum rated, if it's high quality, like this reviewed Seasonic.

I wouldn't buy any Gold unit at this rate, especially at this watt range since I personally care about every watt of efficiency. Platinum is the way to go at this time and date. Earth matters, even if talking about small watts.

Well, you didn't say it word for word but this post gives the impression that you don't think Gold is good and Platinum is better which is not true in every case for Platinum.

That's not saying whether a unit is good or not. That's saying I, MYSELF, not buying a Gold unit at this time even if it's good (like this one).

I'm not a moron. I don't think efficiency equals to quality which is what your post suggests, and I've said this before.

I agree the Earth matters but why take it to the extreme of discounting a Gold PSU for your own use like the one reviewed in favor of a Platinum to save some small watts. Going by your specs you could save a lot more small watts by not running SLI GTX 680s and a 30 inch monitor.

The San Ace 120 used on this unit should be completely fine in normal usage. I had an AX760i with a Sanyo fan, and the fan turned very slowly even at high loads. Yeah, that unit had a better fan curve but still. It's because the tests are done in a clean room box where the fan is the only thing that is absorbed from the outside sound that makes noise.

It's not really taking it to extreme. It's doing it right, again, only in my personal opinion. I wouldn't buy Gold when Platinum has settled for a few years. And yes, sure I can save watts by ditching my parts but then again why should I ditch such parts?

Did you experience any "clicking" noises while testing the PSU? My X-1250 emits a loud "click" when the load rapidly changes (from idle to 100% load on 3 GPUs). This scenario mimics the transient response tests you perform, but I didn't see any mention of that behavior. I am wondering if this is a characteristic of this model or if it is just the one I own making that noise.

Some parts (not just PSU's) make clicking noises when changing PWM frequencies. It happens to some PSU's especially at the first cold boot, and can be emitted with a soft-start circuit.

It's likely not a characteristic of this unit and something that only happens to some. And I believe your PSU is the old X1250 and not the XM2?

Did you experience any "clicking" noises while testing the PSU? My X-1250 emits a loud "click" when the load rapidly changes (from idle to 100% load on 3 GPUs). This scenario mimics the transient response tests you perform, but I didn't see any mention of that behavior. I am wondering if this is a characteristic of this model or if it is just the one I own making that noise.

When the Chromas are in operation they cover every noise coming from the PSU so even if there is such a noise, which I doubt, I wouldn't be able to hear it.
Better contact with Seasonic support and inform them about this noise and they will advise you whether it is normal or not. Personally I don't think that it is normal IF it comes from the PSU, because it might be from another component inside your PC (it is very difficult to find the noise source inside a PC, or to put it better to be 100% sure for its origin).
