Vintage Gaming PC... Need game ideas

I just bought a Dell OptiPlex GX1. 450MHz Pentium III, 256MB RAM, integrated ATi Rage Pro AGP (4MB on motherboard, but it has an expansion slot to bring it up to 8MB and I have a spare SODIMM from an old HP Brio desktop). We should compare notes.

well i should say that i have a Acer Veriton FP board with a PIII 600 and a 450 (Sl1 who came from a GX1 bahaha)+ a naked 500, aside also integrated Ati Rage LT 8mb AGP 2 DIMM bank and only 1 PCI slot and unfortunately a cracked LCD but don't care ... just go retro just go ghetto: case are for ... hum ... oh well whatever

I always though Dark Forces orginial was an awesome game too, even if it was sometimes hard to make out terrain, or certain objects.

Delta Force Games
Pretty Sure Neverwinter Nights and expansions will run on that.
Vampires The Masquerade Redemption
Half Life 2 (set to directx 7 mode will be a whole new experience for you, wish more games would do it)
Not sure if Shogun Total War (not to be confused with 2) will run on that, large battles might be an issue, but you can always auto calculate the big ones.
I was always a fan of the Caesar series 1-3 are playable on that rig.

I miss my yellow and orange DFI Lanparty board with my Opty 165 overclocked to 3GHz. One of the best setups I ever owned. Makes me sad I had to sell it about 5 or 6 years ago. :'(

steam and EA have a few good older games, though they're re-worked to run on newer platforms but should still run on your win98 box just fine. (maybe some slight tweaking)

a few of my favs are some of the older command and conquer games, warcraft 1 and 2 and starcraft, Tachyon: the fringe, shogo: MAD, septerra core, and the classic space sims like freespace 1 and 2. oh and can't forget original half life with expansions and gfx patch (the old game of the year ed with 5 discs).

Jane's Fighters Anthology and Fighter Squadron were pretty good too. you can get a few other flight sims in steam's Novalogic pack.

oh and of course diablo 1 and 2

I am a generation past you guys but I am repairing a 939 system right now, Opteron 144, Biostar N4SLI-A9, 9800GT (pretty modern vga actually). No idea what I will do with it once its working.

Battlefield 1942 is a great game for older computers.

well for me : before 2008 : nostalgic, after 2008: modern (IE: series 200 is modern ) but the 9800GT is still a pretty capable card.

Come now, there's 2 generations of Pentiums between the OP's rig before you get back to dos games. Or did you forget how long ago Chuck Yeager's Air Combat came out? (lemme give you a hint, there was a bush in the white house who wasn't referred to as "Dubbya")

Retro Game Master is the title for the guy who goes around beating NES games considering that was 84-90 I'd say retro applies more than ancient. In reality the rig is only 14-15 years old. If 14-15 years old is ancient, you're prehistoric. lol

I'm 18, but atleast I know the difference between ancient and retro... I would consider an abacus an ancient PC, but even that's pushing it... Any good 2.5D opensource engines for DOS anyone? Been wanting to make a single daggerfall dungeon, town, and mission.

Fan just died on my Nvidia GF2... Stole the fan off the old ATI 9250... Had to put a dab of thermal paste on to keep it in there cause the screws don't line up

Nice thread I will have to delve into it... I've been playing Morrowind chugging along at 10-20fps locked at 20
Don't know why but i find it impossible to play games like this on modern systems, like literally impossible for me... I need my PC to struggle to play games, not gobble them up & shit them out whole
Got a PC for every timeline except pre 90's, gonna hunt ebay for an 8086 - 286 - 386 - Pentium w/MMX and a GPU for my 3Ghz Pentium 4 *HT Engineering Sample probably a PCI 9600 or the likes
Edit* Also building a new gaming rig, but I'm throwing it into an old AT case possibly with liquid cooling
I'll snap some pics of the rig aswell, although tbh, looks like it's seen better days... No power switch just powers up after it's plugged in... Used a Dell power switch so I could get into the bios and enable that
Also lost a good bit of my older computers and parts in a house fire last year

I always heard that something was officially an antique when it hit 20 years old.

But anyways, the OptiPlex GX1 arrived yesterday. I maxed out the RAM to 768MB, slotted in the VRAM SODIMM I had and installed 98SE on it for testing. Works like a dream. So now I've swapped out the hard drive for a faster one and I plan to dual-boot 98SE and 2k on it for now.
