NVIDIA to Pole-vault GTX 800 Series, Name its Next Big Parts GTX 970 and GTX 980

NVIDIA is expected to brand-name its next GeForce GTX desktop discrete GPU lineup under the GTX 900 series, and not the previously thought about GTX 800. In what is a similar brand-name pole-vault to the GTX 300 series ahead of "Fermi," NVIDIA's next high-end discrete GPUs will be named GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980. The brand name could be devised to not just look better on paper, but give users of current-generation GTX 770 and GTX 780 an upgrade-itch, something which could have been difficult if NVIDIA named it under the GTX 800 series, unless its new parts were phenomenally faster.

The GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 will be based on NVIDIA's new "GM204" silicon, derived from its new "Maxwell" GPU architecture, which debuted with the mid-range GeForce GTX 750 Ti. NVIDIA is expected to outline the two cards on the 9th or 10th of September, 2014, at various media events held around the world. The company is expected to formally launch the two on 19th September. The GeForce GTX 800 series could continue to include OEM and mobile-GPU parts based on either "Maxwell" or "Kepler" GPUs.

Name change is just marketing crap anyway, logic is missing. We already have a Maxwell part in the 7 series. I'm already calling it that the GTX940 is a straight GTX750i rebrand.

Rebrands I can almost see the cause for concern - but like anything, if you buy without researching the purchase you pretty much deserve what you get....and as for people who buy hardware because they're swayed by the name - maybe they need to have a word with themselves.

I smell a rat. Again, we'll sell as highest ,the middle class (K104-M104) at the cost of loan sharks. and 28 nm but not 20nm. I suspect that the lifetime of these chips will be limited! Code is ultimately irrelevant.

Didn't amd do this with this generation also? They came out with R9,R7 and the likes and skipped over the (HD)8xxx series entirely for consumers. Only OEM and Mobile models exist and those are few and far between. I am just hoping this will be a Maxwell lineup with no Kepler and Fermi leftowers in the under GTX segment, the 20-30-40-50 series.

This reads to me like they think we are dumb enough to think that being a higher number makes it seem much better than it would have been otherwise. People are not going to go oh look i wasn't getting a 800 series but now its 900 series i'm all for it. It's all marketing drivel, at least with the 400 series they said they wanted to keep 300 series OEM which is probably what they will do with the 800 series now but i don't see why they need to spout some garbage.

If the cards are any good i'll get one but not because of a dumb name change, i was already considering a new gpu.

IMHO it make sense if the next upgrade will be a better step because then they can go to 1xxx or something completely different to show it's something completely different / new.

I guess it make more sense if the next ones will have 1xxx numbers.

Not necessarily. There was a GTX780 in the end, so this might be some mashup between the GM204 launch and the GM110/210 whatever chip that is the full blown one that will most likely end up as the 9xx series.

I don't care about brands nVidia. If you don't deliver another card like the GTX460, I'm done with you. Its just that simple. Good performance, better SLI performance, all for a good price. No markups, no rehashes, no silly little tricks.

I think it's a combination of several things already posted here. Marketing is where it's at. For a long time people have been hearing that the GTX 880 would be 28nm Maxwell and the GTX 980 would be 20nm Maxwell and that would be where the top Maxwell cards would be. It's likely to catch more than a few off guard who will think that the GTX 980 is 20nm. Even so, I expect the GTX 880 28nm Maxwell (if the rumored specs are true) will be a solid card and if it's at a decent price then it's worth a buy. If not then it's GTX 780 for me and wait until 20nm Maxwell Flagship arrives.
