going to run a HDD and then go to SSD

Bottom line here is I have some hardware showing up mid next week. Now I want to run a SSD, probably about a 240 to 256 gig but can't afford that until the end of September.
Now, I plan to run a 1.5tb Seagate for the time being.
I am probably going to partition the drive. 1 being about 120 gigs or so for the OS.

Now here is what I am concerned/wondering about. Keep in mind I realize I will need to set the BIOS to ACHI before installing win 7 as I believe SSD's have to be set to ACHI?

Anyway, can I image the mechanical drive version of the OS and then next month restore it to the SSD?

Any suggestions/help/advise is dearly appreciated.

There are ways to do this, but honestly I feel a clean install is best. If you stick on Windows 7, what's stopping you from Easy File Transfer? Or even dragging the Users directory over?

SP1 should handle TRIM just fine, so you should be good there. I always push for a fresh install...that's the least hassle method. I know that you can do an image over, and depending on the SSD, it might come with software to assist with that too. Samsungs do for sure (or used to I guess I should say!).

Emm, my input: I'd install Windows on hdd for now but not activate it. Install the bare essentials for the time being. When ssd arrives, reinstall and activate it then.

I mean we are only talking about a few days so no harm really. I'm no pro when it comes to copying images over from hdds to ssds so better defer to others for that advice.

Don't partition the hard drive, it really makes things complicated. Just make it one large volume. Then when you buy the SSD, just clone the entire HDD to the SSD. You can use Seagate DiskWizard, it is based on Acronis and it is free since you have a Seagate drive in the system.

Then format the HDD to get rid of the boot crap so the system doesn't accidentally try to boot off the HDD. Then move anything you don't want on the SSD to the HDD.

No, it would be about a month away before I can swing the SSD.

Just install on the platter drive as AHCI. Do not separate your system from your games. Then make a back up image after you activate windows. Install your SSD restore the image.

or
Most SSD come with cloning software and that will work also. No reason to partition.

Even if the SSD doesn't, he has a Seagate hard drive in the system, so he can use Seagate DiskWizard(Acronis TrueImage). :toast:

Macrium Reflect didn't work out so well for me. It just wouldn't boot. I managed to clone over to my Corsair Force III using the version of Acronis that came with one of my WD drives. I cloned the windows install and the little 100mb sys partition to the SSD and then cloned the other portion of my HDD to a newer WD drive I bought. been working fine since. I think i ended up having to extend the partition to fill the rest of the drive, but that was for the mechanical one, no issue with the SSD, other than it appears 60GB is just barely enough room.

also... i did have to make a bootable disc using acronis and clone from an image I made in windows

as for AHCI mode... i think my SATA drives are still in IDE mode, but TRIM is enabled for the SSD so no biggie I suppose.

so when you clone over... be sure you get both windows and the "system reserved" sections on the SSD, worked for me anyway
