whats wrong with my video card?

I have a 6950 with 6970 bios. Been running this card since it released.

Tonight I was sitting at my desk reading my kindle when all of a sudden the video card fan speed ramped up to 100%. Rebooting didn't fix. Reinstalling drivers didn't fix. switching to default video card bios didn't fix. re-seating card didn't fix. manual fan control via amd cat doesn't work. But the card is still providing a normal experience even in games.

Pulled it out and put a 8800GT in and it ran fine without fan ramping up. Put the 6950 back in and fan immediately hits and stays at 100%. GPUz reports the video card temp in the 1000+ C which can't be right. The card isn't getting any hotter than usual by touch. Nothing in the amd cat software is working when I try to change settings.

I'm at a loss.

Seen this before, about 3 times. Your GPU Core Temp sensor has just died. Solution, not really one, most people just plug the GPU cooler into a manual controller.

Sensor dead, Do you see any Capacitors swelling or broken? Like RCoon said manual controller :toast:

I was thinking the thermal compound is not doing good anymore...

Yep cards sensor has failed...manual fan controller is really the only option.

My 6950 did the same thing...TIM replacement fixed it...but it will still ramp up out of nowhere at times.

Yeah you guys were right. bad sensor. I have a fan controller and I'm thinking about hooking it up. I'm also tossing around the idea of buying a R9 290. Been needing a new card for awhile anyways and the 290 is at a decent price. The 290x is a bit out of my budget at the moment.

Been sitting here for a couple of hours reading reviews. I like the GTX 780 as well which falls into my budget but I think I'd like the 290 more.

Gonna use a fan controller as I have one in a box somewhere. Already took the 6950 apart. All the caps look good. Once the controller is wired in I should be good to go.

Well that was a total fail. I wired her up and she worked for 10 minutes. Then died. PC wouldn't boot after that. I should say that the PC booted just no video from card. The fan was working fine though. Time to buy a new card.

PC is fine and the 8800GT works fine. This card has been in my HTPC for years and before that in a gaming rig. BFG 8800GT just keeps on trucking.

As for the 280x my thoughts are the prices will be high but my other thought is the 780 might drop lower and yet another thought is I'm going to buy a 290 so I may as not worry about it.

Ran over to Fry's and got them to price match Newegg's cost plus a $20 rebate and a $20 gift card. :rockout:

I also bought a PNY XLR8 OverClocked Enthusiast Edition GTX 780! After hearing the fans on the 290 (which I thought were still kinda loud) I went out and bought the GTX 780 to compare it with. I like PNY as I have a XLR8 8800GT 512 that is still running like new since it's release day (when I bought it) so I figure this PNY 780 should treat me right.
