Modding EKWB Block to Fit MSI R9 290 Gaming 4GB New PCB Revision.

Just want to share for those who have this card and wanted to fit the EK full cover block. Since I read that EK does not plan to make a block for the new PCB revision, I guess the only way is to mod the existing block.

Not sure if someone else has already done it. I tried googling but couldn't find anything so decide to take the risk and order a block to try out.

The red rectangular shows where the cap interfere with the copper block, need to file it down. After that it will fit.

The grey marks show where the caps will interfere with the block cover. Need to drill it down. I use 8.5mm drill bits which will work but needs to be precise with the position. If not just use 9-10mm ones will also work fine. The other red rectangular shows where the cap will interfere as well, need to remove some plastic as well. I just use a box cutter to scrape off the plastic.

for the VRM part, I just stack up 2 pieces of 1mm thermal pad (used the one supplied by EK). the temp in GPUZ shows 57C when running furmark. Not that great but still much better than the stock heatsink. I am not using any back plate right now. Still thinking of how to improve it. May be addiing a copper strip to the copper block.

For the other VRM area (the small one with just 2 VRM), there is no mod need.

The stock back plate from MSI will fit but the screws used by EK is too short, need to get longer screws.

According to what I have read about the 290x, it seems to be using the same PCB, so this should work for the 290x as well.

Right now, I am running furmark @ 1000/1250 (not intending to oc much). Undervolt it to 1.133V to reduce heat further. GPU shows 49C and VRM1 is 57C. For some reason VRM2 always show 66C regardless of idle or load. No idea why.

Btw, there are some MOSFETS are other components not cooled by the water block. I am not sure if this is an issue right now. I am doing Furmark and monitoring the temp by touching the back of the card. The PCB is hot but not burning hot. Its definitely much cooler than the stock card. I could put my fingers for 5s without any issues (can't do the same with the stock card). Hence I feel that extra cooling may not be necessary. Perhaps just some air flow will do.

Something I came up with before I seen this guide, We took the blocks to a milling machine today to get done. Nice to see that it will work.

The rev 2 adds compatibility for MSI and Gigabyte cards. Be interesting to see what the Gigabyte modification is for as well. I've been shopping for a 290x waterblock, and the EK is my first choice, now I just have to buy one.

I just purchased a trio of the Rev 2.0 block for my MSI Twin Frozer cards, and even used EKWB's cooling configurator, and mine still have nearly the same fitment issues. I only had to basically mirror the cutout on the copper and plexi to make room for the bottom capacitor. I also had to mostly mirror the cutout on the plexi portion nearest the power connectors to make room for one other capacitor. But those were the only sections I had to alter to make it fit perfectly. I did put in a ticket to EKWB just to inform them of this issue or to make adjustments to their configurator or possibly make alterations to their design in the future. It is almost like they just made the cutouts on the wrong sides of the blocks lol.

It's great you sent in a ticket but I as doing my mod, I gave technical documents and points or improvements they replied letting me know that they had no interest in updating the block for this card.

I really hope you continued the channel for that rubber o ring on that section. I'd run lead tests for longer than normal

There was no cutting into any water channels at all. I only took it down to the level of the cut they had made. Hell, I kinda rushed through the job and there still was no real danger. I just used a steel grinding cylinder on my dremel for both copper and plexi, but I turned the speed down on the plexi and rinsed with water regularly. Easy as pie. ;-)
