That si the heatsink for the x58 chipset. There shouldnt be power delivery components right there those are near the CPU power plug and near the memories.

So hello again people...

I swapped to the OEM GTX 460 and the OCZ StealthXStream 600W, and voila, no squealing!

Sounds good right? NOPE.

Because if I swap back to the Corsair HX1000 with the OEM GTX 460, the squeal and stutter comes back...

But wait a minute? The squeal and stutter also happened with the OCZ StealthXStream AND the Palit GTX 460?

That's 2 PSU and GPU combos, producing the same result.

The only combo that doesn't squeal or stutter is the OCZ and the OEM GTX 460... any other combo brings back the problem. What the actual f*** is going on...

Honestly dude at this point we have isolated everything it has to be a card or PSU.

short of trying a different outlet and/or not using a battery backup/power strip it sounds like the cards are throttling because of power but the noise happens on other machines that dont report the stutter problem.

Definitely looks wrong to me. I had sli 480s using 2 psus on my 950, and zero stuttering. My old dinosaur still runs smooth as a baby's bottom.

I smellz a fellow Brit.

How far away are you from Lincolnshire? I may be able to assist, I have a spare 630W Bronze modular PSU, which would at least tell us if it's the PSU or one of the cards.

Well at this point it appears to be both the HX1000 and the Palit GTX 460. That's all I can ascertain from this ordeal :(

The OCZ 600W and the OEM GTX 460 work perfectly together, but the Palit GTX 460 squeals with the OCZ. But it doesn't have enough PCI-E cables to power 2 cards, and I don't think it could anyway. So to test the OCZ with both cards together wouldn't be possible... It would be worth trying another PSU if it really is a spare :)

Got any friends with PC's? Might be worth dropping that Palit 460 into someone else's machine.

Well I contacted the original owner and the warranty is still valid, so I'm going to send it back to Corsair as something is clearly not right. Worst case scenario they refurbish it and send it back. No harm done. Then I'll look at replacing the cards if need be.

PS. I tried link state management and didn't change anything. Thanks for suggestion :)

Hey guys,

Time to update you of the happenings around this issue.

I've now got a brand new Corsair HX1000i, and I've bunged in the Palit GTX 460 again and the problem came back. So I guess it's the card.

Earlier on in the thread I posted a video of the squealing, somebody said it sounded like a busted capacitor on the Palit? I'm not somebody who will be able to fix that, but is there any way I can find out if that actually is what's wrong with it?

Noises like that come from coils normally but id be surprised if the chip itself is getting pretty hot. Since you went through several psus its time to sell off that 460 if its that annoying to you or both even and get a 760Ti

Well I managed to find some good deals on AMD R9 290's, if anybody thinks that's a good idea? I've got my eye on one for around £190... is that a decent price? The new GTX 970's start at about £260 so I don't really wanna hit over £200

Maybe you should check the reviews for noise levels from R9 290's.

Even if they were an issue, you'd probably just cut the fans blades off to kill the noise anyway
