LOL @54th void.
Your age hasn't taught you any tolerance, just the opposite (I'm 56 btw). This is the video game medium. Why would you even be still interested in gaming if you expect all games to follow books precisely? I mean how many really do? And the ones that DO follow books or movies closely usually fail, because they don't bring much new and original to the table.

They take liberties here because this is a completely new timeline between LotR and The Hobbit, and I think even Tolkein would admit it's not out of the ordinary for some to want to fight Sauron with more than mere mortal human ways. Even in LotR they show such temptations, but they're not used because the ring corrupts the mind.

There's no ring here, there's a wraith. Different timeline, different events. Whether you accept that or not is up to you. It takes a bit of imagination.

@ Ford,
LOL, how much do you really know about that icon? 1. it's not styled to look like an AC counter icon, 2. we don't really know yet if it's just an imminent attack indicator or a QTE type press button to counter feature like in AC, and even if it is, such features are common in a lot of games, Batman being just one of them.

And I'm sorry but wraith mode is far from being a mere vision enhancement like Eagle Vision, nor does Eagle Vision even allow you to see that well in most AC games. It was pretty useless because of that. Wraith is a power you buff and has many capabilities, and is also a separate entity.

Knock yourself out though. If you keep it up you just might manage to find a handful of things that are similar (some vaguely so) by the end of playing the game in this quest of yours to prove "virtually everything" is the same.

@ Solaris,
Again, pay attention, this is not LotR nor does it intend to follow the LotR story. It's a separate timeline and events loosely woven into the same universe. In fact if anything it's that looseness that is meant to give the game originality, diversity and replay value.

I'd be more interested in a new "Blood" or "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division" than a new LotR game.. Now don't get me wrong I would very much like a "good" LotR game. But I don't know if Monolith Productions can do for LotR that Rocksteady did for Batman.

Not really, I guess its distracting and simply annoying I imagine thats not why many people are interested in it. Is'nt that why you made the thread to know? Or did you want to try and convince us its worth our time? I wonder.

I find it hard to believe you're 56 and arguing like a little boy who hasn't got his way because people aren't interested in your game.

Buildings obstructed the view and there were a lot of buildings. It would only help if you were generally in the right place to begin with. Since this is a more open game by the looks of it (not predominantly in the middle of cities) the Eagle Vision would naturally be more useful. They also took it a step further by going beyond just vision. My point is that, visually, Wraith mode and Eagle Vision look almost identical. Again, way too many coincidences to be a coincidence.

For the record, I have no major problem with a game being built on Scimitar/Anvil/Anvil Next. It is a respectable engine. My primary problem is that it is based on LotR. The gameplay has to be mindblowing to overcome that shortcoming.

So, I'm the only one that wants a new "Blood" or "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division" and now thanks for reminding me @newconroer a new Shadow Warrior!...lol

Shadow of Mordor just looks fun to play. I am putting the miniscule debate away in my head about similar this and that. I have read all of the books and saw the movies etc but don't really care if it is lore specific. Fun used to be fun so lets see if it still is when I buy this game.

Solaris,
I made the thread partly to see who is and isn't interested in it yes, but my arguments go far beyond trying to convince anyone it's worth playing. I don't really care if you're not interested. I simply feel many of the comments against it are false speculations and need clarification, and I think I've proven that in many cases. I knew there might be a lot of apathy, but never did I expect such blatant disregard for the obvious.

That you would go so far as to thank an OT, unprovoked, insulting post as the one above, only shows you're oblivious to respecting tactful, intelligent discussion though.

Guitar,
I find it odd you equate clarifying false speculations as acting like a little boy.

The immature boys are the ones that preorder falsely advertised games, then whine about it after skeptical players warn them about it, and also whom misrepresent games themselves, then go silent when proven wrong. Sound familiar?

If you can't handle intelligently discussing the topic without childish insults, I suggest you avoid it altogether. This is not like when Ubi falsely advertises a game. If anything, in this case, players are falsely representing it, and even defending Ubi on naive claims of copied content.

Ford,
So now you're admitting only the look is similar to Eagle Vision, and as I pointed out, even there they only recently made Eagle Vision look bright enough to see everything like that. In most AC games, Eagle Vision was utterly useless. Then of course there's all the moves and powers of wraith mode, which is primarily what it's about, not just the vision. Suffice it to say you only notice cosmetic similarities, and only to recent AC games.

And btw, I found two more interview videos last night with Monolith studio leads, and they both say the engine is Monolith's own creation and has been worked on for some time. Why you're implying, and even insisting, that it's AC derived, makes no sense. Monolith are known for making complex AI script, such as that in the first FEAR game. Ubi never produces such elaborate AI with their engines.

Oh, but yes people, I must be mad for pointing out misguided speculation, failed observations and the unique qualities this game has that other LotR titles or AC can't begin to match. I'm not here to convince anyone, but I won't stand by and let people misrepresent the game to anyone whom may be reading this, esp in a thread I started.

All I can say is you not only haven't played this one yet, you've probably not been paying attention to the huge differences it has from the past ones.

I never took interest in or played the past ones either, but I do like much of the LotR mythos, and this one def caught my eye with it's unigue qualities.

@Everyone - Guys let's get along. It's just a game..

@Frag Maniac - Don't ask a question, if you can't handle the answer. Most of the time the guys that have answered are the ones that post stuff about up and coming games and they are telling you why. Don't get mad when they don't feel the same way you do about it. :toast: As for me I hope it's a good game, because I like LotR and Monolith is a good studio, but just based off of the other LotR games I'm not excited that this game is coming out. I'll wait for reviews, and then make my decision. :toast:

So much debate, wow :D I haven't checked out a single video because I don't want to jinx it  After so many let downs, I have drastically reduced my enthusiasm in pre-launch trailers and promises and I try to avoid them as much as possible. No expectations = no disappointment :peace:

I'm sorry at this point the next lotr game might as well have Frodo shooting lightening bolts at people. The series is literally that pointless.

Basically this. Most actual lore in any story is generally shat upon by developers in order to make the story in their game marginally somehow relevant.

I personally enjoyed the Battlefront version of LotR game, and that was about the only one.

This is not a LotR game with RPG elements, it's a game with RPG elements and some kind of "inspiration" from the LotR lore. To label it as an actual creation of JT would be folly.

The guy IS dead, what are we supposed to do now, stop making LOTR inspired media and seal it in a plastic bag and put it on a shelf? I expect games that are inspired by popular books/movies to have a somewhat different approach, the same goes with tv series/movies inspired by books. It's just the way it is :)

I suppose the main issue I'm bringing to people's attention is that generally IP for these types of things gets given to a terrible developer. Look at Warhammer of late, and Star Trek, and countless other popular cultures, that are for some reason being immortalised into games by cheap gimmicky developers.

There is such a thing as leaving something be.
Sometimes one or two games is enough.

That's true, if I think about it, only a handful of games are truly worthy of their origins (KOTOR, Jedi Knight, Lord of the rings - battle for middle earth, star trek - birth of the federation, etc).

The reason we have the problem Rcoon and z1tu is talking about is because gamers are retarded. Good writers are much harder to find than people being able to produce shiny graphics and empty sandboxes and useless cover systems and people thinking maturity = boobs and blood and for some reason people just don't care about stories anymore. All because gamers are wankers and wankers buy shallow things.

All this is why Obsidian should make a LotR RPG set in early Second Age, without the elf-wanking.

Well, I am guessing after reading the last few posts, that I am not considered a gamer, mostly because I do have my head about me, and because my number one priority in games is a STORY. That's pretty much why i prefer single-player as well.

So, if this game has a good Story that draws me into it's world, much as a good book or quality movie does, then I will play it...even if it does take liberties with the work of my beloved JRR Tolkien's world of Middle Earth.

War in the north and Conquest where not very good games, this is probably why no one is hyped about the new one.
Looks like a bit of an Assassins Creed clone and that game is extremely boring.

Im all for a good LOTR game, i mean come on its a fantasy medieval setting with a large backstory so how the hell no one can make some fun and intuitive gameplay to go with it is beyond me.
