Just to mimic TIM post. I used Shin-Estu X73D on all of my GPUs without any problems and it really drops temps a good bit.
I have applied some Gelid GC-Extreme thermal compound that came with EK Supremacy water block. And It helped to drop gpu temperature by another 6c compared to MX-4.

Half of a frozen pea in a dead center, the same method i used for Arctic Cooling MX-4. Is that what you mean?
I should have been checked how well it spreads but i didn't. The tube bundled with water block are so small. I used most of it on CPU.

I also reapplied a thermal pads on VRM1 using EK's pads. It's way better then no name chinese pads from ebay. If you guys remember my card card came without any pads installed (my thanks goes to MSI worker :banghead:.)
120C without pads
95C chinese pads
85C EK pads.
I know It should be a bit better than that. I guess 1mm thick pad simply is not enough for a good contact between mosfets and heatsink .

Hi I recently purchased an msi 290X OC and was wondering if my power supply would be sufficient? The power supply I have is an Antec TP-750C, hoping this will be fine as the msi site says recommended 750w or would I need to upgrade it?

Hi guys, im new here and this is my first post. Just to let you know about my R9 290 temps. I had a problem when gaming my card would go to 95-96c and started throtteling down at 100% fans.
Yesterday i went and bought a MX-4 paste and re-pasted my card in 45minutes. I tightened the screws as hard as i could.
The result were amazing, "vally bencmark" and "fire strike" temps went only to 85c and fans speeds were at 60-80% :) mega happy

Sorry for bad english, not my first language

Updating the bios wont fix the heat issue. take the card apart and clean the fan sink and chip thoroughly using Arcticlean, then apply MX 4 thermal compound to the chip.

Just got myself a used 290x gaming (temps suck) and was wondering if I should update the vbios with this: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/152762/msi-r9290x-4096-131223.html.

Why use a bios that's clocked even higher then the one you have? Its going to be hotter IMO.. Buy some MX-4 paste and that'll help the temps. Just be sure to supper clean the chip and cooler. MSI mix a wax in there paste as I had heating issues in the past. I had to use articlean to get the crap off that you couldn't see.

I wasn't after the higher clock when I asked about the bios. I thought it might help with the temps, due to lower voltage, improvements, etc. BTW, I already cleaned the old paste and applied some Noctua NT-H1, so now its at least usable.

Lower voltage depends on quality of the card. There is a asic build evaluator that can tell you whether your card can maybe handle lower voltage (which doesnt necessarily mean it can oc that high) or overclock high (which doesnt mean it can necessarily handle lower voltage)

ASIC quality is 81%. I have been able to use -50mV on the core, seems stable so far. Load temps are around high 80s. Would be great if I could just bring it down slightly more.

Is it possible that the newer bios could help with that?

I think afterburner/trix have such settings...

Thanks, but I have one thing to bitch about. In the MSI email I was sent it shows 2 different serial number / card numbers with a check list. I can't make heads from tails if they actually just sent my card back or replaced it with a new one? I talk to one MSI guy and they say Canada don't fix cards. Maybe the number I see is tied to the original for warrenty purposes. Its pretty sad the Canadian number I called linked me to MSI in California and when I asked about the RMA he said to call Canada... Lol what a screw around. I hope after I get the card there's an option for let us know how we're doing.. Well I got it straight after sending in the info for RMA so if I select somewhat happy I hope there's a comment box because its going to be filled up.

Edit: got tracking number and email from MSI directly. They must of seen my rant and told me that indeed they issued a brand new card so my hat goes off to MSI, thank you sir! And tracking says this Friday so I'll be patiently waiting for Purolator to drive up and gime my goodness lol

MSI's RMA department guys that handle cards to send out after testing are complete idiots!

I sware Im done with this company. I got the card back today... Installed it in the bottom slot and the fucker was hitting 94c running Valley Benchmark.

I never had a card run so hot being the lower card so I pulled it appart and what do you think I found,

Anybody?
