I would have just gone for the G1 gaming because I liked their z87 and z97 so much. I'm going to be very sad to sell the z97 G1, but it will fetch a bit more money than the z87 G1 sniper 5. The "special" socket from Asus is the deciding factor though, I don't think I will be able to sleep at night if I bought the Gigabyte G1 board, even though the onboard audio is a big deal to me.

Is the Asus (Rampage Extreme V) audio likely to be as good as or as near as dam it to the Creative audio on the G1?

Has any one here had a play with or own a X99 G1 gaming? What do you think of it?

I will be using this build for my new business, vidio editing drone footage in HD and ultra HD. Gaming and some benching. And I'll be over clocking it, a lot, for fun. Because of the gaming aspect I'm looking at these two boards and not the Asus delux or WS.

Does any body here want to big up the Gigabyte board and give me something to think about before I buy the Rampage V.

Another thing, my last two gigabyte boards have not been great at mem OC'ing and have had no BLCK over clocking at all (a bios issue I think). I know Asus boards are great at this and the Asus 2011 v3 socket is primed for this. Has any one here got a X99 Gigabyte board? Is the blck thing fixed?

Best DDR4 for over clocking? I'll be buying 2800mhz or above. At the moment I'm looking at these.

Crucial ballistics looks great and a good price too. The Dominator mem is £100 more than the Vengence at the same speed and cas. I have never had Dominator mem, what is it that makes it so revered?

Corsair doms (if they still use sammys on ddr4) use samsung IC's which allow them to be overclocked pretty damn well. Just like the mems on videocards, different brands oc differently.

Youd have to really look at the features and reviews to choose the best mobo for yourself. The RVE is definitely oc orientated but doesnt lack any features. Also check the lane spacing, some have weird pcie configs.

Thanks for reply d1nky. If they do still use samsung IC's then the doms will be my first choice. I think RVE will be the one I go with because I have only got a few days to decide and I'd be very lucky if a review of the G1 came out in that time and showed it to be very good.

remember you are well within your right to return it before 30 days if you do not like it.

Personally I prefer the Asus boards. Gigabyte's bios/software is inferior from what I've seen. My board of choice for X99 is the Deluxe, but the Rampage is also a really solid option.

I would not bank on having a lot of OCing margin on current DDR4 modules or CPUs. A lot of them seem to have trouble around the 3GHz mark, and with 4 channels you already have a pretty big overhead as far as memory bandwidth goes. One thing you can really easily is push up the volts. DDR4 seems to run fine at 1.5v and the memory controller on the CPU (if I understand correctly) seems to be capable of running DDR3, which means 1.5+v

You can lower the timings. Frequency is not the end all be all of ram OCing.

This is the picture I was getting, mem OC topping out around 3000-3300 and that slacker timings on DDR4 is still producing good synthetic bench results.
I suppose I could always swap a board if I'm not loving it.

I think it is undisputed that Asus bios has more control and is pretty solid and from my own experience Gigabyte bios is a bit lacklustre. But I have heard that Gigabyte have been releasing a lot bios for x99 and that they are better now.
I could really do with a X99 G1 review but I can not find one on the web, maybe there will be one in the next couple of weeks. I have decided to hold off on buying a board for two weeks.

Would love to own the X99 G1 but, that Asus socket!

Didn't GB also get a similar thing done on theirs? But definitely the Asus is better in BIOS/Software.

No, Asus is the only one with modified socket. @cadaveca, or reviewer, has the boards, Asus, gigabyte, msi etc, and only Asus has the different socket.

Apparently Gigabyte has one on one of their OC boards, but not sure which one. Definitely not on the GAMING G1.

Must be the SOC Force. Unfortunately I can't tell from pictures though since theres a socket cover on all of them.
