I'm thinking about upgrading to an eyefinity setup. Should I upgrade my CPU? Should I pair my current monitor with 2 new ones or buy 3 new ones?Should I buy 1 or 2 r9 290? Part suggestion are welcome. I kind of want to do a portrait setup instead of landscape.

If you are wanting to run that resolution, you current CPU should be fine overclocked like that and you will be better off with 2 cards to run games near max.

Generally with monitors as I have noticed (I run one off and on now) it is not a big deal as long as they are the same resolution and very close in size. If your speaking specifically about mixing brands I would not worry to much but generally its better to have all exactly the same.

Benchmark Scores Have tried but can't beat the leaders :)
your CPU is fine but you might encounter problem on x58 chipset.

I dont have x58 but I read about crossfire issues with x58 cards

R9 290X Compatibility

I am not going to speak much to this, but I tend to monitor our video card forums heavily around launch times. When we do our testing, we do so on the latest hardware and simply do not have the resources to reach far back into the product stacks...but our readers do. (And for that we thank you.)

I have noticed two circumstances where there seems to be some compatibility issues with R9 290X CrossFire and some (not all) older X58 chipset systems. We don't have any conclusions for this yet, but it is something to be aware of if you are looking to go this upgrade route with your GPU and X58 and possibly X79 chipset motherboards. Also during the first week of 290X card availability I saw some users having issue with their games black screening, primarily Battlefield 4 which, from all of our testing, we know is full of bugs. This seems to have been mostly addressed in the Beta 9.4 and 9.5 drivers, although a few folks are still reporting issues.

if you search X58 290x crossfire you will find alot

But that was last year. I dont know if it has been fixed. You might wanna search more before purchasing.

Probably better upgrading system to z97 and 4790 as you listed.
