Lol someone that barely overclocks paid a premium for a card that was more or less made for extreme (read: sub-ambient) overclocking. Could have saved some money... but oh well. Great card regardless.

All the Bozos that bought 7970s/280x for mining are unloading them because GPU mining isnt profitable for small scale anymore.

$15USD is barely anything; hardly "paid a premium". A Maccas dinner box costs more in AU. That card comes with higher stock clocks than all of them which should be more important to someone who doesn't OC, but still wants decent performance. It should theoretically run cooler and last longer due to its higher grade components in comparison to reference/slightly tweaked boards. If it was closer to $50 more, then one could argue it wasn't the best deal...

Either way, I think any of them would have been a decent deal. You'd be hard pressed to find them for under $270AU second hand here.

I'd suggest you tell your friend to wait some more and save a bit more because if he already has a 7870, he won't see a significant enough jump with the 7970.

7970 GHz edition not a bad upgrade after 7870 either. 7970 a high end GPU still. excellent performance level. in the end all depends on budget.

secondly yes waiting for maxwell would be worthy too without any doubt. surely future proof

I paid $400 for a pair of R9-280X OC cards Used. I couldn't pass up the deal.
One is ASUS, and the other is HIS. No heating or stuttering with them at all.
Using them in Crossfire now. It was my best deal yet on GPUs

Lol this deal is awesome, the Porsche comparison just is nowhere close.

Matrix cards have resale value, and especially a 7970 because any Matrix 7970 owner looking to Xfire it will pay you the same price any day of the week. Same with Lightning. These are enthusiast versions of enthusiast cards, and they're not being made anymore. Some consider these collector's items, even (I question their sanity, but that's another story).

To the OP,..................one of my R9-280X OC cards is the ASUS 3GB TOP that you mentioned possibly getting.

It's a good card that has provided seamless and trouble free gaming since I got it. Being newer than the 7970 cards, it may have some newer technology baked into it. This is reason enough to choose it.
