I joined to ask you a question. Did yours come with a backplate like we are being told? Is the logo on the top side of the card backlit?
The reference 980 comes with a backplate and the logo on the side of the card is backlit.

Hey, just joking as usual but, haha.... Does each of us have to open his "I got myself a Geforce 900 Series"? I ordered the Gigabyte 980 standard today. I wanted the vacuum cleaner a la Titan cooler and I don't want SLI anytime!
;)

Regarding BACKPLATE: the Zotac (extremely) customized board seems to have the GPU chip screws IN CONTACT with the backplate, so transfering heat! But the rest of the boards have a backplate without contact. Someone understands WHY such an easy cooling element is not being used?

Why you spend your money for 5% increase of performance ?

You have to stick with the 780 still a monster of GPU.

I've decided to buy the 970 as it outperforms my GTX 780 OC at a fraction of the cost

It out performs the GTX 780 in every test and it only costs: $339.94 plus tax; while my GTX 780 cost: $489.99 plus tax. IMO performance and value make the return more than worth it.

but considering I get a full refund and in turn will save $153.15 I cannot pass this up

That's why;)

I'm trying to decide if I want to get a 980 or get a 970 and then another 970 down the road. I'm somewhat leaning towards the 980 since in most bench'd games it achieves over 60 fps at 1440p.

If money is not a concern, then the 980 hands down: very impressive card having the performance and the low-power as well as the sexy looks! 980 now, another 980 down the road! :D

It's out of my price range right now, so I'll have to wait, but I would really like to try out the Green side this time around. I know some don't care about power draw, but it has become a concern for me in recent times.

I'm just a bit on the fence since Nvidia will most likely come out with a higher tiered card and I haven't seen the competition's answer yet. My days of just buying hardware whenever are over and I don't necessarily HAVE to upgrade.. but more performance is definitely welcomed. I gotta mull it over during the weekend.

Let's all remember that Nvidia Maxwell 9 series is also the first HDMI 2.0 Graphics card. So those of us that spent $$ on a 4K TV will finally be able to Set Res at 3820 X 2160 @ 60Hz.

Hey you took away your system specs :p Your logic is sound, and I give you props for not having upgraded from that 7970 for so long.

AMD will release a card to compete at a lower price but higher power, and then Nvidia will release the 980ti, which will be a beast, hopwfully accompanied with price drops. When all the cards are out and pricing settles, I'll make a decision

Personally I think I'll go with the 970 most likely of I do change out hardware and if it does decently with folding, unless the 980 can eventually be bought a good deal cheaper.

I am going to sell my R9 295X2 when NVidia makes the 980ti or equiv monster card. AMD failed when they did not include HDMI 2.0 support (Which 96% of 4K TV/Monitors have)....

Nice buy, grats. :)
Just picked up two GTX 980's at EVGAs store.
Going to be using them on my 4k Samsung 50" tv. Via HDMI 2.0.

Word of advice though.
If you want to overclock, PNY isn't the best way to go generally.

If you already have a GK110 (and can't return it) there's not much incentive performance wise to get these cards, more so when you know the real performance parts aren't that far off (GM210 I'm guessing), but if you're on an older card or switching teams the 970 is pretty damn appealing. I bet it will sell at least as well as the 670 unless it gets replaced sooner.

I'm trying to understand why you'd have to get another 970 "down the road" at 329$ 2 of them are 658$ the cheapest 980 is 549$... if that's on the table why the F not 2 970's? 22% more performance at 1080p than a 980, 31% more at 1600p, and 32% more at 4k all for ~ 19-20% more money, not on the table? yet the 980's on the table despite offering only 12% more performance than a 970 at 1080p, and 13% more at 1600p and 4k while costing a whopping 66-67% more?

I say if you want the performance, get 2 970's now. If you want to be budget minded get a single 970 and wait and see what the future holds. By the time you need another something else might be out that makes more sense at the time.

Not totally impressed with this card. My GTX 780 OC out performs it in every bench I tried except 3dmark. (Heaven, Valley, Metro 2033) (GTX 970 at stock clocks)

I did a full system wipe once the 970 was installed as well. Reviews I read of this card had it competing nicely with the 780 and in some cases the 780ti. I don't see it though.

I doubt my cpu and mobo are holding it back as the 780 ran fine on them (MSI P67a-gd65 b3, and 2500K @ 4.4GHz).

I mean the card runs fine, blows through all my games but I expected more in the benchmarks. If I return this card I'll have to pay Newegg a restock fee of $51 which kinda blows. But I'm still tempted. I'm thinking about the GTX 980. Or just keep my GTX 970 and hope drivers provide better performance later and maybe add a second GTX 970.

Been trying to overclock it but EVGA Precession X software doesn't hold my adjustments after the pc is rebooted and I have to load the OC each time. I'm saving the profile but the card reverts back at every reboot. Is there a program for overclocking that once a clock is set it stays? That alone would make me keep this card as once overclocked it really takes off.

Don't get me wrong...this card rocks but after reading the Techpowerup review of this very same card I expected more. It still kills everything I throw at it though.

Well I could certainly understand keeping the 780 for sure. More so if you would have to sell it because you would not make enough money off it to justify the performance increase on the 970 but considering I get a full refund and in turn will save $153.15 I cannot pass this up.

That's enough spare change to buy a good sized SSD.

Yeah at this price I just don't see me returning it. Once I figure out how keep my overclocks on this card when rebooting PC I will be set. Overclocked it performs better than my GTX 780. My issue is I can't keep the OC from resetting.
At stock speeds though it doesn't live up to my expectations.

Ahhh I'm a dumb ass. First time using evga precession x software and I didn't see the 'start up' button. My overclock is sticking now so I'm gold. Now off to OC and bench...

Well I take back everything negative I said about this card. With it over-clocked at 1279/3906 I am now killing my GTX 780 in every single test. I'm stoked at the moment.
