They are ok for Htpc Tasks but beyond that yes they are considered obsolete.

No they arent. Maybe if you kept it on XP, but 7 and 8 brings it to a halt. I had a P4 in an old dell that I quickly gutted and rebuilt a file server into and used a new Sandy Bridge Pentium.

You have to be pretty high on the good stuff to think the P4 is not obsolete or still adequate. Chips have been obsolete for years, im honestly surprised we have such a thread going about this.

Out in the real world there are lots of people who are still running Athlon XP and Pentium 4 stuff. Light users who barely do anything with their PCs.

I know some women who love their Pogo online gaming and apparently that stuff still runs fine on such old hardware.

Biggest issue then is users with nf4 chipset and a Ati Card would get a code 43 when the cpu was a dual core. And i noticed Without the proper gart agp cards would only run at pci bandwidth and not Agp bandwidth
NF4 is PCIe. Maybe you mean NF2/3? I don't know if I've ever tried Vista/7 on NF2, and I've never used NF3 at all. NF4 works fine with Vista/7 though.

Yes i mean nf2 but nf3/4 users had issues aswell. The biggest problem for all users is graphics card code 43 (NF3/4 ATHLON 64 X2 AND AMD/ATI CARD). Vista/W7

Or Agp being only at pci speed (NF2) Vista/W7

OMG, I ditched my P4/1950Pro rig for gaming I think over 5 yrs ago, and even that was clinging too much. The last straw was when I loaded up the GTA IV expansions TLaD and BoGT, and it couldn't play them without crawling at single digit frame rates.

Even though that rig played GTA IV fine by comparison, with sensible settings of course, I decided enough was enough. I DID however curse Rockstar a lot for not making the GTA IV expansions as optimized for older hardware as it was.

I won't even work on XP systems anymore when neighbors ask me to. It's not just because it's a huge security risk I don't care to facilitate them with, it's because most everyone I encounter still clinging to XP are on systems so slow it takes forever to do the smallest tasks, no thank you.

The last lady that did this is on an old eMachine that only has 384MB RAM due to it being shared by the onboard graphics. It has a 13" 5:4 display. She pays $540 a year for her ISP and I told her that warrants getting a better PC.

The ironic thing is, she and her husband have the best vehicles of anyone in our apt building. She's just being cheap. She offered to cook me dinner for helping her, but rather than explaining to her that is not enough compensation for all the time it would take, I just told her she needs to finally get a better PC.

Sometimes I have this dreaded lingering feeling like they're mad at me without saying so, but hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I'm getting better at saying no.

I've got 2 Northwood 478 3.2Ghz (with that way not-awesome HT they had), and I doubt I could even pay someone to take them on e-bay. Last I looked, their cut of $5 to $10 they go for would have made it a whopping $2 to $3 return! So they sit. I even have a perfectly suitable motherboard to go with one, and some DDR1, but don't have the slightest what to do with it. The time to sell it all is long past.

It's a serious thread until trollers come in.
Did I hear you needed trolling?

I know a lot of businesses that still use P4 machines. For some for the old timers who consider solitaire exciting and don't need it in 3D at 4K they work great. Putting along on the forums my CPU spends most of its time at 900Mhz and the GPU is idling, more power is used to run the water pump and fans than the rest of the PC. They are still fine as long as the motherboard doesn't crap out from the old bad sets of caps we had back then.

We had a couple of P4s running on 865 boards with Windows 7 starter in the office. Never got any problems or complaints but yeah, the power consumption doesn't correspond with their processing power. I replaced them with a couple of Celeron 1007U boards.

I thought by saying "it's a huge security risk I don't care to facilitate them with", I'd adequately hinted that I already warned them that it's no longer security updated since April, but I guess I failed. You'd think that it's been plastered on network news they'd have a clue by now.

Suffice it to say a lot of people out there need to stop buying PCs solely for convenience and start getting a better understanding what they're getting themselves into. Much of the public is still very ignorant about them. Most people can tell you just about everything there is to know about cell phones, but they haven't a clue about the most basic things about their PCs.

Hey bro trust me on this- working at Att as a Prem tech made me realize how majority of earths populace are just plain stupid and lazy to understand all of this. They are spoiled and only care about turning it on like a Tv or a game console. People have tried to claim their internet speed is slow but in fact its their pc being a pos.

Uverse is too complicated for the elderly and so are the flat tvs.

I've known plenty of people in the pre-smartphone era where they would buy a new computer every one or two years because the spyware would pile up so much on their system it would slow to a crawl. I once cleaned it off of a friends' and they were quite upset afterwards that they no longer had Wild Tangent and McAfee installed. Next time I came by, the spyware had been reinstalled. People are really dumb.

I used to play GTA San Andreas on a P4 630 (3Ghz) system with a GeForce 6600 XXX and 2GB ddr2 on win xp, and that was around 2004-2005 or so.

I still have my Prescott based Celeron somewhere waiting to become a keychain

Yeah, I have a Prescott Celeron [D 320] lying around in a drawer along side a 1.5Ghz Northwood P4. Both are 478 socket. I went looking for them the other day because of this thread thinking of maybe throwing together a system again, but alas I no longer have an MB that supports them. Maybe a keychain would be a fitting way to 'recycle' them.

On a side note, I remember news/rumours from years ago about a successor to the Prescott called Taja(?) or something where Intel was looking at implementing pipelines of over 50 or so stages! Imagine the branch prediction needed for that!
