Hey all

I've just recently upgraded my computers CPU+Motherboard to a Asus Maximum VII Ranger and a 4790k and I'm experiencing high temperatures. Basically, it idles around 30c but shoots up to 60-65c installing software. I mean, the CPU will be working but I don't like the look of this temperature range not using games.

I'm using a Corsair H60 cooler (2013) edition and it looks compatible, but I'm not sure if Corsair H60 can support this chip as 1150 isn't mentioned on the product specs. I take it its alright to use?

Anyway, I've applied two different paste (mx-2 and Mx-4) both are having this problem. Also, I can't seem to get the CPU fan (The pump) to increase RPM to 4000rpm. It's stuck at around 2900-3300. I think this might help things.

Thanks for reading.

Run OCCT along with real temp monitor or something, if the CPU stays below 90 degrees you're doing fine.
Don't faff with the pump speed and what not, those AIOs are fine with their basic settings. Screw with the fans instead.

Check for board flexing, If fans/rad are clogged, clean them.

I've cleaned the fans a week ago (including the rad). I'll do occt or intel burn test to see how high this goes. Does this chip naturally run hotter? I had a sandy bridge last time (2500k) and it was 51c at 4ghz (1.26v).

Chip lottery my friend, lots of processors just run plain differently.

I prefer RealTemp, it gives you the actual distance to TJMax, which is the important number.

Also, I believe your pump should be plug into a fan header that isn't speed controlled. The pump should be running full speed all the time. Plug the actual fan into the CPU fan header.

I wouldnt worry much. If it starts crashing or bsoding then its time to. However sometimes it takes time for tim to bake in. Also luck of draw in manufacturing...

60-65°C when installing software is kinda high. But you really need to post temps you get while running a stress test like OCCT so we can get a clear picture.

Keep in mind that a 4790k on asus boards will probably boost up to 4.4GHz on all cores (normal all core boost is only 4.2GHz) which will raise the temps quite a bit.

So much for speedstep. Anyway, i'm gonna try and put the pump through a molex connector to get it to run at 100%. I'll check temps again and then do a burn test. I don't want to risk it going to tjmax and damaging parts

I say try another cooler. The jump of temp all of a sudden indicates to me that its not working right. You know AIO coolers don't last forever. Throw the stock fan on and see

I was considering that model of chip since it's guaranteed to run 4Ghz stable. It DOES run a bit warm though, which was my main concern. I might hold out for Broadwell, which is a die shrink of Haswell, or even Skylake, which might support DDR4.

You can try disabling turbo boost (speed step) and HyperThreading so it just runs at a 4GHz ceiling with no virtual cores adding heat. HT doesn't really help gaming anyway, and you can always enable it if you're doing video encoding or something.

BTW, did you unpark the cores, because that will raise temps a bit?

Did OCCT for 5 mins with an air cooler (Arctic cooling 13 pro - the big one) and got 77c on the package. Bummer.

Are you using the pea method or spreading it. What ever your using try the other. And that's not OC?

I am using the pea method yes. I apply a pea size blob in the middle, then apply the heat sink and fan. I've used Mx-2 and Mx4. I prefer Mx4 for its spreadability. Not OC. It's at stock 1.2v 4ghz

That temp looks normal to me since that haswell is probably boosting to 4.4GHz and is running at 1.2V with just ok tier air cooling.

Thanks for reading.

4790K owner here. The temps you are experiencing are perfectly normal. For better cooling try a better AIO like the Corsair H100i / H105. Devil's canyon runs hot. I'm running my cpu at 4.7GHz and it reaches 70c whilst playing BF4 with my H100i fans at 80%.

I'm pretty sure Ivy Bridge onwards switch to a TIM rather than solder between the heat spreader and die, so you can't really directly compare the temperatures of those generations with a Sandy Bridge.

Is it possible to turn off the intel graphics chip? (I'm using dedicated 280x) Would it effect the temps? Intel says T max is 72c for Devils canyon. How come people are hitting above this and not having trouble?
