EVGA GTX 980 SC Unstable at stock speeds

Got my EVGA GTX 980 SC today, made a clean install of the drivers (344.16) and played Assassins Creeds 3 for about 1 hour and worked flawless.

Then I tried do make some benchmarks with Heaven Benchmark 4.0 (using stock clocks).
First run was perfect, but when I tried the second run the software started to freeze: black screen > software minimize > software comes back to screen > black screen again > start all over...

Now when I try to play Assassins Creeds 3 or TF2 or any other game that is 3D the game crashes (sometime even at the menu), and when it freezes give me the 'driver stopped working and has recovered' message.

Tried with 344.11 but the crashing continues.

Also, noticed that after crashing Nvidia's driver lock my Core Clock at 999 MAX, that way I can play without problems, but as expected, with fps impact... so... its really a OC issue, but the real problem is that they are at STOCK speeds... EVGA or Driver problem? Thats the mistery...

Before the 980 I had 2 x 660ti in sli, so I dont think that its the PSU.

Here are my specs:
Psu: CoolerMaster SilentProM 850w
Mother: Sabertooth 990 FX R2.0
CPU: FX-8350
Memory: 12gb DDR3 1600mhz
OS: Windows 8.1
Driver: 344.16

He are some picture

At the first one you can see some blue blocks...

The second one you can see that the CORE CLOCK goes higher than the BOOST CLOCK, is that possible?

Not sure how that is an easy solution or a solution at all.
What's to say the next card won't do exactly the same thing?

Waiting weeks, dealing with RMAS, mail and nonsense is not a solution imo.
Contact EVGA support first. They actually have competent people.

If they can't give you any answers, then consider an RMA.

Actually no. Since its a brand new card. If he contacts his retailer and let them know theres something wrong with it they should have him a new one within the week.

By making him contact Evga and have him send the card to them would take much much longer.

If you think you already know whats wrong with his card and the same card he replaces it with then you are a much better fortune teller then i will ever become.

If the card is faulty, why beat around the bush wasting time attempting to fix it?

Try the card in a diff pc if the same thing happends then contact retailer
Dont waste time trying to mess with it. The card is brand new you shouldnt have to put up with this in the first place

Also its not as if unstable@stock cards are a completely rare occurrence. You shouldn't need to up the voltage for it to run stable on a brand new card its an issue with the AIB not dialing in the correct voltages into the bios or failure at QC

Where do you get this information?
First he has to start the RMA process.
Then they have to accept it.
Then he has to mail it in, in the mean time he has no gtx 980 anymore.
Then he has to wait or them to get his card.
Then he has to wait for them to mail him one back.
2 weeks minimum.

Yes I read minds..
No, it's just I have dealt with the RMA process before.
Have you?
That "IF" is a big if.

Call tech support, it is 24/7.
At least see if they have a solution before you start a multi week process of RMA.
A phone call takes a few minutes..

Actually its a UK policy thing. If something goes wrong within 2 weeks of purchase the retailer HAS TO provide you a new card from their stock if available unless they dont have one. Then an equivalent model but failing that a full refund.

Ive done it before myself. Some retailers will even send you out a new card before theyve even received the faulty one back but you might need to provide your credit or debit card details just incase you tried to con them.

Most retailers i deal with only ship stuff via next day delivery so down time is minimal so long as you get your faulty card out to them quickly. Turn around time is 3-4 days if not a week depending how quickly you get your card to them. But of course rage harder at me for providing "false information" since thats what all you seem to be doing on these forums

Youre acting as if ive never dealt with an RMA before let alone having received faulty hardware from day one

PrecisionX/GPU-Z show the actual clock (dynamic boost) and should be higher than the theoretical boost clock. Look up GPU boost 2.0 or Kepler boost.

Maybe increase the power target to solve the instability problem? Although I agree that at stock setting, no power adjustment should be necessary.

The GTX980 released so far should all be of reference design, i.e. no ACX.

Hi, that was a good idea
I've tried here but... i dont know if the EVGA Precision is really setting something, because I tried to underclock but changing the clock didnt make any diference, so i dont know if the Precision is really changing the power target.
I put the power target up to 125% but no luck, still same thing :(

I am returning my evga GTX 970 SC for the same reasons. Card is completely unstable. If I lower the super clocked card to ref. clocks it is stable. I shouldn't have to down clock my card to gain stability.

I'm pretty disgusted with evga about this and the cooler and the loud fans...I'll not be buying that brand again any time soon.

I picked up a Zotac GTX 980 yesterday and it is awesome.

i heard that EVGA's RMA should be good, and since you have a brand new product that's not stable at what it's sold at, it should just be a normal swap if you contact EVGA's RMA not where you purchased it...

Card is brand new just return it to the retailer.

USA / Canada / UK etc its pretty simple just send it back for a refund by a different brand problem solved. Never had an issue with this ever and I have had some DOA hardware usually deal with Newegg in the states they just give me store credit = to what I paid and I buy something else turn around is usually 8-9 days and most etailers have a 30 day return policy regardless. So send the EVGA card back get something else.
