I'd do the E8400.

Yea, I had an E8400 @ 4ghz and when I went to my Q9550 @ 3.4ghz it was like night and day. It would be a tuff call for me either way because I like both chips. I've never played any games on my old Q6600, but it crunched really well @ 3ghz. I just know I would use the extra cores.

system specs: e8400@3.6 at the moment. 8800gt for Gpu, Far Cry 3 playable low-to medium 1680x1050
unless you OC 6600 very high 8400 will be better (oc is still preferable).

This. The e8400 is a good chip, I usually pushed most to 3.6Ghz (iirc...whatever 400FSB got with their multi...I believe it was 9X) with stock voltage or close to it. I have dealt with many Q6600's as well...and honestly, it depends on the user...but at least if the extra CPU power is needed it'll be there with the Q6600. Core2's are still decent, but I'd get the quad for threading power.

If not...and you have around $100 laying around...I can highly recommend this combo: Biostar B85S3+ and Intel Pentium G3220 dual core. Fast, power efficient, very capable. Would smoke either Core2's in this thread at stock speeds and consume less power doing it.

I was always able to get my e8400 to 3.6 on stock voltage. Only a tiny bit more to 3.8. It still ran cool no matter what. I never tried above 3.8, but from the forums at the time, probably over 50% of e8400's hit 4.0Ghz and above. It will do great in gaming!

Older games will benefit more from single thread performance. If you overclock both of them the dual core will be the faster one by 600-1000MHz. It would depend on the motherboard you have and the cooling.

Also good to remember that Minecraft (in alpha form 2009), TF2 (2007), and CoD4 (2007) all came out when those chips were the latest and greatest, so either CPU will be more than adequate.

I'd do the E8400 on crappy boards or Q6600 heavily overclocked on good boards that won't burn out under heavy CPU power load. A Q8000/9000 would be preferred but those can by pricey.

BF3 is usable on a 4GHz E7200, I don't really see the problem he will have unless he can't get it to around the 4GHz mark... The biggest problem I see him having in modern games will be with memory. I've had stability problems running pairs of 800MHz 2x2GB kits on my Maximus II Formula.

I would go with the E8400. About 6 or 7 years ago I was running with one and a 8800 GT and it was doing just fine in games. The kids can probably even play some modern games and turn down the settings.

my experience is pretty much the same, but I went from a E8400 to a Q6600, and within 2 weeks, yanked the Q6600 out and bought a Q9650. The Q6600 just felt extremely sluggish compared to the E8400 and Q9650. All that extra cache per core the E8*00 and Q9*50 really made a big diference in performance. My E8400 didn't have a problem doing 4.275 GHz (475fsb*9) in a EVGA 750 FTW motherboard.

Really would depend on how fast you can get them to run I'd think. I'd guess the Q6600 will be quite a bit better IF you can get it to run at 4GHz, but that would require an exceptionally good chip and motherboard.

I'd go e8400... my q9450 was only marginally faster, and way harder to oc. But that was back in the day, now the 9450 might be not bad pushed to 3.8ghz.... even on my p5q deluxe mobo... I still run a first gen i7, and it blows the doors off it....

The only reason for that is the increased memory bandwidth and SMT, 'cause if it wasn't for those, clock for clock single-thread performance was pretty much identical to Core 2 Quad. The main reasons I skipped Nehalem/Westmere, when I had a chance to upgrade from a Q9550.

SC2 is notoriously single thread based... Clock speeds are king in those and the modern AMD chips really suffer in that game.

That graph is totally inadequate, with a celeron beating C2D, C2Q chips it shows that it is all about single thread perf where the architecture and clockspeed matter and not the number of cores.

With that board I would push a C2Q all day long. I had a P5Q Deluxe that pushed e8400's, e8600's, e8500's, q6600's, and a badass q9650. P45 + C2Q = WIN. My old setup is still running, and OC'd at that. Was the best Core2 system I had built during that era for sure.

yep i played star craft 2 single player campaign on max and i was surprise d it was pleasant experience, maybe i lowered AA but anyway. after seing those tests im having some thougts about going for pentium g3258.
but CPU+MB+RAM will be about 200$ or less if i sell my old. not a bad deal.
